Oakland officials are investigating a party last weekend at the Humanist Hall, an events space that hosted large gatherings in defiance of public health orders for much of the pandemic and was ordered to shut down.
Officials persuaded a judge in November to require the event space at 411 28th St. to close down. The manager of the space, David Oertel, was due in court Dec. 15 over the conflict, but at the hearing, officials learned that Oertel had died Dec. 5.

For months, Oakland officials had struggled to figure out how to handle David Oertel, the outspoken manager of a large events space in Oakland who defied health orders and held weddings, funerals and parties at the space, indoors and often without masks.
After neighbors and public health experts complained, the city finally moved to try to shut down the space.

Good morning, Bay Area. It’s Thursday, Dec. 17, and another Californian could be heading to the Biden cabinet. Here’s what you need to know to start your day.
Near a breaking point
Intensive care availability plummeted in the Bay Area on Wednesday to fall under 15% for the first time, forcing the entire 11-county region under the state stay-at-home order.
“It’s completely troubling” to see the entire region drop below 15%, said Dr. Kathleen Clanon, medical director of Alameda County Health Care Services Agency. “Our community has the ability to turn this around, by masking and staying at home. That’s what’s going to make the difference now. We can’t do anything at the hospitals to prevent getting full. It’s our whole community that needs to turn this around.”
