On May 5-6, 2021, officials of Turkey and Egypt held a two-day meeting in Cairo. The meeting was chaired by Hamdi Loza, Egypt’s Deputy Foreign Minister, and his Turkish counterpart Sedat Onal. This was the first diplomatic level talk between the two countries in eight years.
In a joint statement, the two countries said that the exploratory round of consultations between Turkey and Egypt were frank and in-depth. They addressed bilateral issues as well as a number of regional issues, in particular the situation in Libya, Syria, Iraq, and the need to achieve peace and security in the Eastern Mediterranean region. “The two sides will evaluate the outcome of this round of consultations and agree on the next steps,” the statement said.

For this bookseller of Kabul, the pandemic was a blip in a country afflicted by long-term war

For this bookseller of Kabul, the pandemic was a blip in a country afflicted by long-term war
Shah Muhammed Rais of Shah M Book Company fame was inadvertently prepared for the pandemic.

“…But all this world is like a tale we hear
Men’s evil, and their glory, disappear.”
This is one of the 50,000 couplets that make up 10th century poet Abul Qasem Firdausi’s
Shah Nameh: The Book of Kings, a masterpiece in Persian that offers philosophical insight into almost every human dilemma. That, at least is the feeling of Afghanistan’s legendary bookseller Shah Muhammed Rais, a man whose own tumultuous biography is perhaps no less epic than Firdausi’s magnum opus.

Ghani adamant that no more Taliban prisoners will be freed until bloodshed ends

(Last Updated On: December 17, 2020)
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani said Thursday government will not release any more Taliban prisoners until the “bloodshed” in the country stops.

Addressing a press conference in Kandahar, Ghani stated that the Taliban needs to stop the violence before any more of their prisoners are released.

This comes after the group recently called for the release of an additional 7,000 prisoners, in line with a deal the Taliban signed with the US in February.

Ghani meanwhile said on Thursday: “If today I ask (order) to release 2,000 people (Taliban) would you (Ulema) release them? Definitely not!”

“First, they (Taliban) should stop the bloodshed then we will negotiate. Why are they afraid of stopping the bloodshed? My question is clear. If you (Taliban) want to get into politics, we are ready.”
