New Hyundai Bayon 2021 review | Auto Express

Verdict
The Hyundai Bayon isn’t the most spacious small SUV, although boot space is good, but it’s a rounded package that rides well enough and offers a punchy, electrified powertrain that helps performance and efficiency. On this early first drive of a European-spec car, it seems like it could be a contender in the crowded compact crossover class.
Small SUVs are a big selling niche, and while Hyundai has its Kona compact crossover, there’s still room in the line-up below this for an even smaller model, the Korean firm believes.
Hence this, the Hyundai Bayon. It’s an i20-based small SUV to rival the likes of the Ford Fiesta-based Puma, and it certainly has presence thanks to the car’s funky styling, with the large grille and narrow running lights that are rapidly becoming a trademark of Hyundai’s SUVs.

The Canterbury-based AM100 group claimed Dealer of the Year 2020 with its Hyundai Worcester business and Aftersales Dealer of the Year 2020 with Hyundai Maidstone at the brand’s virtual awards event.

From the front, the all-new Hyundai Bayon is the latest micro-hatchback to be stilted up and sold as a crossover in Europe, along with other new cars like the sporty Ford Puma. But from the rear, the Bayon appears to be a well-executed homage to one of the most loathed American designs of all time: The Pontiac Aztek.

After some teasing, the Hyundai Bayon has made its debut in the European market with an engine line-up that mirrors that of the Hyundai i20 N Line; a 1.0 litre T-GDI direct-injection with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance in 120 PS and 100 PS states of tune, the same engine without the mild-hybrid electrification and a naturally aspirated 1.2 litre MPi petrol engine producing 84 PS.
The range-topping mild-hybrid petrol unit can be paired with either the automaker’s six-speed intelligent manual transmission (iMT) or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, while the purely internal combustion 1.0 litre T-GDI engine can be paired with either a conventional six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The NA 1.2 litre MPi engine comes paired with a five-speed manual.

No, you’re not looking at the new Hyundai Kona. Instead, what you’re seeing is the 2021 Hyundai Bayon, the South Korean automaker’s most recent and smallest B-segment crossover for Europe. Drawing its name from the French capital of Bayonne (one of the most scenic destinations in south-west France), Bayon offers a compact footprint, numerous connectivity services, and a string of peppy yet fuel-efficient powerplants.
“As the SUV body type continues growing in popularity throughout the world, Hyundai saw a demand for a model capable of navigating European cities while providing enough space to meet customer’s needs,” said Andreas- Christoph Hofmann, Vice President of Marketing & Product at Hyundai Motor Europe.

All-New Hyundai Bayon Is Here to Meet the Endless Demand for Subcompact SUVs

This is the all-new Hyundai Bayon, a crossover that may signal the fact we’re not talking about a conventional way of developing or upgrading a brand’s range of models anymore. The car looks damn good, yet it seems the Koreans made it just because they could and had enough resources to do it. That said, the Hyundai Bayon’s dimensions are almost identical to those of the already known Hyundai Kona. And no, it is not a case of the Bayon replacing the Kona.

Named after the Bayonne city in France, as it is considered a European product, the B-segment crossover will be positioned under the Kona. It is understood to share many components with the i20 supermini, which was renewed for 2020.
Most (if not all) of the engine lineup should also come from its hatchback sibling, though it remains to be seen whether it will get the 201 HP and 202 lb-ft (275 Nm) of torque 1.6-iter turbo unit powering the i20 N hot hatch. All versions of the Bayon will be strictly offered with front-wheel drive.
Previous teasers have revealed a bold front end, with a tiny upper grille, giant lower grille and split headlamp design, similar to the Nexo and Kona. The back end will feature an angular tailgate with the Hyundai logo in the middle and V-shaped LED taillights on each side that appear to be joined together by a thin light strip.
