The U.S. Embassy in Indonesia has issued a security alert for American citizens, asking them to maintain increased security awareness and heightened vigilance at places of worship following a slew of terrorist attacks, including a church bombing on Palm Sunday.
“The U.S. Embassy encourages American citizens in Indonesia to maintain increased security awareness,” reads the notice issued last Wednesday. “Indonesian authorities warn that the terrorism threat level remains high.”
The warning comes after two suspected terrorists attacked a church in Makassar, Sulawesi, on March 28 and after an assailant with an Airsoft gun attacked the Indonesian National Police headquarters in South Jakarta on March 31.

Dangerous levels of pollution in Cape Town's rivers, vleis and estuaries

A new report reveals that water pollution across Cape Town’s rivers, vleis and estuaries has been getting steadily worse for 40 years, except for a few years.
The 88-page Inland Water Quality Report summary, released on 9 February, shows worsening pollution except for a slight improvement between 2010 and 2015. In a footnote on page 22, the City warns that the rivers, vleis, and estuaries are so polluted that swimming is not recommended.
The coastal water quality report was released a year ago, and revealed widespread pollution of the marine environment. But this is the first inland water quality data made publicly available since the 2016 results contained in the 2018 State of the Environment Report. The latest data from 242 testing sites shows that many of our rivers, vleis, and estuaries have over time become so polluted that swimming or wading is not advised.

Indonesia raids find explosives, militant suspects after church attack

2 Min Read
JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesian police discovered powerful explosives and arrested more suspected Islamist militants on Monday, after a series of raids following a suicide attack a day earlier outside a cathedral on the first day of the Easter Holy Week.
The two bombers were the only fatalities in Sunday’s attack in the city of Makassar on Sulawesi island, which wounded 19 people and took place as mass was finishing.
Police said the bombers were a married couple who belonged to Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an Islamic State-inspired group suspected of suicide attacks on churches and a police post that killed at least 30 people in the city of Surabaya in 2018.

Indonesia tightens security at tourist spots in wake of terror attacks

Indonesia will persist in its efforts to prepare for the reopening of Bali, Batam and Bintan to international travellers, despite the recent terrorist attacks that took place in Makassar, South Sulawesi and Jakarta.
On March 28, a suicide bombing took place at a Roman Catholic cathedral in Makassar which wounded at least 20 people. Three days later, a lone-wolf terrorist attempted to attack the national police headquarters in Jakarta. A number of suspects have been arrested following police raids conducted in various cities across the country in a counter-terrorism crackdown. Indonesia authorities are also on heightened alert for possible terror attacks in the near future.
