Hangzhou (China), Apr 11 (IANS): In an indication that esports will certainly be a medal event during the Hangzhou Asian Games, the recognition given to the Asian Electronic Sports Federation (AESF) by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is being seen as a "very positive step" ahead of the quadrennial games in September 2022.
The recognition drew applause from top sports administrators, with Saudi Arabia's Prince Faisal Bin Bandar Bin Sultan Al Saud, whose country will host the 2034 Asian Games, welcoming the move.
"The partnership between AESF and the Olympic Council of Asia further legitimises esports globally and provides the athletes and the fans the support they deserve," Prince Faisal Bin Bandar, who is the president of the Saudi Arabian Federation for Electronic and Intellectual Sports (SAFEIS), said.

SINGAPORE/JAKARTA - Steep inclines and sharp turns have become a thing of the past for motorists on Indonesia's Sumatra island after the first highway there opened last September.
Travelling 360km on a completed stretch of the highway - between the busy Bakauheni seaport in the southernmost province of Lampung and Palembang city - took 10 hours, or six hours shorter than on normal roads.

Ngurah Rai International Airport is the fifth airport to implement GeNose after the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II international airport in Palembang, Husein Sastranegara airport in Bandung, Yogyakarta international airport, and Juanda airport in Suraba Jakarta (ANTARA) - GeNose, a COVID-19 breathalyzer developed by an Indonesian scientist, can initially be utilized at Bali’s Ngurah Rai international airport for screening travelers, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has said.
“Ngurah Rai International Airport is the fifth airport to implement GeNose after the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II international airport in Palembang, Husein Sastranegara airport in Bandung, Yogyakarta international airport, and Juanda airport in Surabaya on April 1 (2021),” Sumadi said in a press release here on Saturday.

Tokyo, April 9 : Within days of qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics in 4x100m medley relay event, Japanese swimmer Ikee Rikako, a cancer survivor, looks set to qualify in an individual event as well after clocking the fastest semi-final time in 50m freestyle in the trials on Friday.
"I feel really good, all things considered. I hope I can wrap up the meet on a positive note. I might be tired physically but my goal for this competition has been to empty the tank each and every time I swim," Rikako said after posting the quickest semi-final time of 24.87 seconds.

The crackdown on these nine suspects was conducted following a tip-off from residents that there was a delivery of marijuana packages to Palembang and Jakarta Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) - Personnel of the Aceh police continue their crackdown on an inter-provincial drug ring in the province, as they recently apprehended nine suspects along with 194 kilograms (kg) of cannabis.
"The suspects are apprehended at several places in Aceh Province and Medan City, North Sumatra Province," Aceh Police Chief Insp. Gen. Wahyu Widada stated here on Wednesday.

The Catholic Church of Indonesia has called on Catholics to show compassion to victims of the devastating flash floods and landslides that hit the country’s predominantly Catholic province of East Nusa Tenggara last weekend.

Days of heavy rain due to the tropical cyclone Seroja tropical, have affected 12 cities and districts in the province on Easter Sunday, killing at least 138 people, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said on Thursday.  About 61 people are reportedly missing, while 271 homes and 99 public facilities were damaged. More than 8,000 people were evacuated to shelters including ones belonging to the Catholic Church.

Aceh has been in a state of emergency over drug trafficking with trans-national and inter-provincial drug rings still active in the province despite the ongoing crackdown against them.
Both police and the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) have continued to clamp down on drug kingpins and their drug supply networks in Aceh over the past few years.
Looking at the physical evidence of drug crimes local police and BNN officers have frequently seized, cannabis and crystal methamphetamine seem to be most commonly trafficked drugs.

Ripples of appreciation and delight are spreading through the sporting world at the news of Rikako Ikee's qualification to swim at her home Olympics this summer, two years after she announced that she had leukaemia.
At the time of the diagnosis in February 2019, the then 18-year-old had established herself as one of Japan’s poster athletes for the imminent Tokyo Olympics having won six golds and two silvers at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, where she was named the most valuable player of the multi-sport event.
Ikee was released from hospital in January 2020, saying she would be focusing on qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
