Renewables, particularly solar panels, are projected to surpass coal as the top source of electricity production globally by 2025, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The IEA's annual report on the electricity market states that renewables should account for over a third of total electricity production, reaching 37% by 2026. When combined with nuclear power, low-emission sources are expected to generate nearly half of the world's electricity by 2026. The IEA also anticipates a slow decline in coal usage, with electricity from coal decreasing by 1.7% annually through 2026.

In its annual report on the electricity market, the IEA said that renewables -- in particular from solar panels -- should see their share of total electricity production surpass a third of the total, passing from 30 percent last year to 37 percent in 2026.

Following record growth, electricity generation from low-emissions sources will account for almost half of the world's power by 2026, up from less than 40% in 2023, the IEA said in report on Wednesday.Renewables are expected to overtake coal by early 2025, accounting for more than a third of total electricity generation, the report said.
