[OPINION] Lumingon tayo sa ating pinagdaanan sa COVID-19

[OPINION] Lumingon tayo sa ating pinagdaanan sa COVID-19

A Filipino idiomatic expression posits: "
Ang 'di lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makararating sa patutunguhan." Those who don't look back on where they came from won't get to where they're going."
With this nugget of Filipino wisdom, I argue that after a year of the government clearly failing in our battle against COVID, it is time we make this government more accountable for its dismal leadership in the health sector.

It is time to really point fingers now, I say. Mind you, this is not about playing the blame game. This is about making public officials and supposed leaders accountable for their apparent and almost criminal incompetence.  I say “almost criminal” with now over 10,000 casualties in our country, scores of them being health workers and otherwise young and vigorous members of the national workforce.

I will remember the silence most of all. Visiting high school basketball gyms and hockey rinks in this winter of COVID-19 has been unlike anything I’ve experienced in nearly 35 years of Upper Valley media work. The sound of a raucous crowd, the loud music, the screeching shoes, slicing skates and bleating whistles were replaced by a relative quiet, the sporting arena reduced to a library missing only the person with a finger pressed to lips, requesting peace.

How To Get A Job In Crypto Even If You're Not "Suitable"
The crypto world is still so young. We have nowhere near enough rational voices in the community today. If you're willing to invest time and effort, you can build a name for yourself. Good karma for your next interview.

One of the stories I'll proudly tell my grandkids someday is I was employee #1 for Malaysia's first digital asset (cryptocurrency) exchange
I'll tell them having a blog helped.
That the company approached me not because I had a "degree in Blockchain", but because I was already writing about Bitcoin online. Don't let anyone tell you exploring your passion is a waste of time.

[OPINION] The scope of loss: 5 years after the UP Faculty Center fire

[OPINION] The scope of loss: 5 years after the UP Faculty Center fire
Apr 1, 2021 10:15 PM PHT
Jonathan Victor Baldoza
The news erupted sometime after midnight. Though my tasks for the night remained unfinished, I was glued to my social media feeds as they generated an avalanche of updates.
Once it was verified that the reports were neither fake nor part of a cruel April Fools’ prank, that there was indeed a fire and it was in fact the FC being razed to the ground, I felt an anguish and panic that only kept worsening as the incident went on. While the FC was no paradise – with its terrible indoor lighting, poor ventilation, cramped spaces, and dilapidated facilities – it was, nevertheless, to professors and to many of their students, a home in many ways, an intimate bazaar in the greater marketplace of ideas, a welcoming shelter for the inquisitive mind.

[OPINION] The new normal, 366 days later

[OPINION] The new normal, 366 days later

John Leo C. Algo
It has now been a full year since the Philippines entered a “new normal.” The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced the country to go on lockdown to limit the spread of the coronavirus, and it is a state in which it has remained to this day.
The Duterte administration's management of this crisis has been disastrous. While neighboring countries such as Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam have been successful in curbing the spread of COVID-19, the Philippines continues to record thousands of new cases on a daily basis, with no signs of slowing down. The economy is experiencing a recession, which is one of the worst among developing nations and whose impacts would be felt for years to come.

[OPINION] Class struggle: On the history of Christianity in the Philippines

[OPINION] Class struggle: On the history of Christianity in the Philippines
Mar 17, 2021 3:52 PM PHT
Orly Putong
2021 marks 500 years since Christianity came to the Philippines. As a predominantly Catholic country, the celebration of its quincentennial is very important and is inevitably tied to our nation’s whole history. But it is also a perfect time for us to not only celebrate, but also evaluate its legacy in our history and society.
According to patriotic historian Renato Constantino, Filipino [Christian] history is predominantly seen through the lens of Spanish and American historiography. During the nationalist ferment of the late '50s up to the early '70s, there were attempts to challenge these predominant views of history. These can be seen through works such as the 1946 pamphlet “Peasant War in the Philippines,” which was anonymously reprinted in the
