A mine operator says an elevator suddenly dropped approximately 656 feet while carrying workers to the surface.
South Africa is the world's largest producer of platinum. The Impala Rustenburg mine has nine shafts and was the world's largest platinum mine by production last year.
Impala Platinum has confirmed that as of late Tuesday 75 employees involved in Monday's shaft accident remain hospitalised, 14 of whom are in critical condition.
