Road to Jeopardy! Weeks 8 -10: What the Mayonnaise?
I’ve been in-between moving apartments and so missed a few posts, but this week I’m back to rail against how little we know of Native American history. I was reviewing Native American history for Jeopardy! purposes and it’s sad just how little we are expected to know on this front compared to the comprehensive list of Shakespeare minutiae we must memorize. The trivia canon seems to only care about warrior chiefs and battles, and the list pretty much opens and closes with:
King Phillip’s War aka Metacom’s War (1675–1678)
Massacre at Wounded Knee (1890)
Nothing much before nor after has made its way into trivia lore, with the exception of Will Rogers and Jim Thorpe. No expectation for us to learn the stirring achievements of Native American tribes or to know any Native American women beyond Sacagawea and Pocahontas, both of whom have been so mythologized at this point that we often forget that Sacagawea’s husband, for example, began as her captor.
