Will Only Work With Centre, Says Pfizer As States' Vaccine Bids Falter

Pfizer said discussions with the centre - to roll out its vaccine in India - were "ongoing" (File)
New Delhi:
States scrambling to buy Covid vaccines directly from foreign manufacturers - to boost what they say is insufficient supply from the centre - seem to be running into a roadblock in some cases, with at least two pharmaceutical giants refusing to sell to them.
American companies Pfizer and Moderna have turned down requests to supply Delhi and Punjab with their vaccines. Both cited official policy and said they would only deal with the centre.
"Pfizer will supply COVID-19 vaccines only to central governments for deployment in national immunisation programmes. Allocation of doses and implementation plan within a country is a decision for local governments based on relevant health authority guidelines," the company said.

Eight states account for 59.5% of the total doses given so far in the country.

The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 12 crore as part of the world’s largest vaccination drive, it said.

India likely to make less availability of vaccines globally: Gavi
India, which is experiencing a sudden rise in the number of COVID-19 cases, is now likely to make available a smaller number of vaccines to the rest of the world, the head of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation has said.
“India is, by volume, the largest supplier of vaccines for the developing world. Because of the new wave of outbreaks in India right now, the Indian government has stepped up their vaccination programmes, and that has meant that they've required more doses, which means that they've made less doses available for the rest of the world,” Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi told CBS News in an interview.

Health experts have written to the Centre demanding an "urgent investigation" into the deaths and serious adverse events following the administration of Covid-19 vaccine. They also raised concerns over the possibility of blood clots among beneficiaries post the inoculation.
"We believe that due to the possible linkages of vaccination and blood clotting, all these deaths and adverse events should be reviewed together for a possible causal relationship with the vaccine," experts said in their letter to the central government.
