It wasn’t so long ago that we convinced ourselves we are a superpower or, at least, one that’s definitely in the making. We believed the evidence was long and compelling -- the world’s largest democracy, the sixth biggest economy, a 1.38 billion-strong domestic market, excellence in IT and the West’s back office, an unbeatable cricket team, the home of Bollywood, one of the most successful diasporas and, of course, a Prime Minister on first name terms with all the world’s top leaders. The RSS was convinced this was because we are a Hindu majority nation. The BJP was more specific. It was because of Narendra Modi.

The state government has agreed to allow the pilgrimage to four shrines – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath – despite criticism that the Kumbh Mela had allowed the virus to spread in the state. The criticism around accepting foreign aid comes at a time when India is in the grips of a second COVID wave, with more than 300,000 cases being reported daily. The surge in infections has led to the straining of the medical infrastructure and shortages of oxygen and life-saving drugs, prompting the Modi government to look for options overseas.
India’s main opposition Congress party on Thursday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for accepting aid from foreign governments, as it pointed out that the decision marked a policy reversal on the part of New Delhi.
