BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- A team of Chinese vessels is actively assisting with the salvage of a sunken Indonesian submarine, having conducted 18 underwater operations since arriving in Indonesian waters in early May, Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Tan Kefei said at a press conference on Thursday.
China dispatched three vessels to assist with recovering the remains of the KRI Nanggala-402 submarine, which sank in the waters north of Bali on April 21, killing all 53 people on board.
Following the underwater salvage operations, the situation of the sunken submarine has been basically identified, Tan said, noting that some objects have been lifted by the Chinese vessels, all of which have been returned to the Indonesian side.

Indonesia's navy said that an operation to retrieve parts of a submarine that sunk with 53 people on board last month has been able to pull up two life rafts from the bottom of the sea.
The German-made KRI Nanggala-402 lost contact during a torpedo firing exercise on April 21. An international search team involving Singapore, Australia and Malaysia found the submarine four days later, sunken and broken into three at a depth of more than 800 metres north of Bali, DPA reported.
Indonesian navy second fleet commander Rear Admiral Iwan Isnurwanto said on Tuesday that each of the life rafts weighed 700 kilograms.

The Indonesian Submarine retrieval will have Chinese assistance to haul it from the seabed at 838m, which requires deep-sea vehicles to accomplish that. One of the biggest questions is how did it happen.
Indonesian Submarine retrieval is underway to know its circumstances
The Indonesian navy experts say an internal solitary wave caused the sinking of KRI Nanggala 402 and the losses of its 53 crew, which is known to occur in the seas around Bali, which is a normal phenomenon. It seems the sub was caught unaware by the deep-sea wave, report RNZ.

Jakarta [Indonesia], April 25 (ANI): The Indonesian submarine that went missing off Bali with 53 crew members on board has sunk, Navy officials said on Saturday.
Indonesian Navy authorities said that the recovered debris indicated the submarine with 53 crew members sank. The submarine's oxygen reserve was estimated to run out early Saturday, reported DW News Agency.
"With authentic evidence believed to be from the KRI Nanggala, we have raised the status from 'sub missing' to 'sub sunk,'" said Navy chief Yudo Margono, citing retrieved debris from the vessel.
