Char Dham project: Detailed geological study is needed before infra activity in Himalayas, says environmentalist Ravi Chopra

The Silkyara tunnel is part of the Union governments ambitious Char Dham Mahamarg Pariyojana. It is a highway widening project for almost 900 km in Uttarakhand to provide all-weather connectivity to the Hindu pilgrimage sites of Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath. In August 2019, the Supreme Court set up a high-powered committee to examine the “cumulative and independent” impact of the project “on the entire Himalayan valleys”.

climate crisis: Net zero should not be an excuse to not get off fossil fuels, says Spinoza Prize winner Joyeeta Gupta

Joyeeta Gupta, the Indian-origin scientist and professor of environment and development in the Global South at the University of Amsterdam, has criticised the inadequacy of the global response to climate change. Speaking in Delhi, Gupta claimed that countries are waiting on others to take action and that despite claims of working towards net zero, there is no clear plan on how to achieve it.

Synopsis
India needs to innovate and play a larger role in vaccine distribution. First, it must try harder to inoculate more of its citizens as quickly as possible and simultaneously demonstrate its soft power by supplying more and more vaccines to the rest of the world.
A month and a half after Covid-19 vaccination was rolled out in India, the government has allowed private hospitals to enter what was hitherto a no-go zone: vaccination on payment basis.

'The Priya Ramani verdict upholds right of survivors to speak the truth, anytime, anywhere'

It was irony that was hard to miss. In India, one of the most high-profile cases to come out of the #MeToo movement against workplace sexual harassment perpetrated by men in powerful positions saw a woman, journalist Priya Ramani, become an accused after former Union minister MJ Akbar charged her with defamation. A Delhi trial court judgment, hailed as historic, not only acquitted Ramani but made several progressive statements.
