Pamplin Media Group - Is pro wrestling real or fake? Yes

Portland Tribune reporter admits to enjoying his 'guilty pleasure' of the self-described entertainment sport.
Government restrictions to fight COVID-19 abruptly shut down nearly every live performance event in the country early last year, including concerts, plays, dance performances — and such guilty pleasure as monster truck races and, my personal favorite, professional wrestling.
I can hear the howls of protest now. "How can possibly like professional wrestling? It's so crude and fake!"
Then why is it so enduringly popular, even spawning spinoffs like "Young Rock," the new semi-autographical comedy series on NBC about Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, the former professional wrestler who is now arguably the most popular actor in the world?

Pamplin Media Group - Opinion: Downtown Portland dies only if we do nothing to stop it

March 03 2021
Jessie Burke is with the Old Town Community Association's business committee. She also owns The Society Hotel in Portland's Old Town.
I recently read three articles about the state of downtown Portland — one concerned ("Death of a City: The Portland Story?" Jan. 28, Forbes Magazine) and two seemingly mocking the first ("Portland is the new Pompeii, according to Forbes," Jan. 30, Willamette Week) and ("Crying Wolf: If Portland tourism dies, you can thank downtown business interests and the police," Feb. 1, Portland Mercury).
I have been a Portland small-business owner for more than a decade, and have lived in Portland for almost 20 years. I am a woman, a minority (Chinese), a mother of three, and a former social worker. I started in the Kenton neighborhood with a small coffee shop and bakery, and five years ago I opened The Society Hotel in Old Town.

Pamplin Media Group - Opinion: When is a tree more than a tree? When it's our heritage

March 05 2021
Margo Craig is a St. Johns-area resident and a tree lover. She writes that we should better use our tree resources.
The latest winter storm claimed at least one of Portland's oldest residents, an Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana), Heritage Tree No. 200. The departed was about 250 years old, one of several old oaks that tower over Willamette Cove from the bluff of North Portland.
The elder oak was a vestige of Oregon's oaky past, when Indigenous burning practices maintained great swaths of oak woodlands and savannah. It was for good reason: oak trees are more resilient to fire than conifers. Scientists call White Oak "habitat magnets," that support birds and plants. Indigenous people took advantage of this, as well as the elk and deer that oak attracted. Oak trees will provide essential housing for the animal kingdom's inevitable climate refugees.

Pamplin Media Group - Pending legislation could push area boaters off the Willamette

Pending legislation could push area boaters off the Willamette
March 04 2021
Proposed bills would restrict towing sports, including in the popular Newberg Pool section of the river
Oregon House Bill 2555 is directly tied to a 20-mile stretch of the Willamette River, but if passed, its ripple effects could be felt as far as Hagg Lake in rural Washington County.
The proposed legislation is aimed at the Newberg Pool and would restrict towing — people on wakeboards, wake surfers and inner tubes to name a few — to boats not exceeding 4,000 pounds.
The Newberg Pool is the part of the Willamette River roughly between Newberg and Willamette Falls in Oregon City. It is a popular place for area boaters.
