The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will be on standby to assist the police to deal with any violence that may arise from the Economic Freedom Fighters' (EFF's) planned countrywide shutdown on Monday. On Thursday, ministers in the government's security cluster briefed journalists at a media conference on the Cabinet meeting that was held on Wednesday.
Police Minister Bheki Cele has assured South Africans that measures are in place to protect citizens, property, and businesses during the planned nationwide protest by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
The EFF leader Julius Malema warned on Wednesday that the National Shutdown could be the start of a possible revolution.
Malema said there would be NO violence as this is a peaceful protest. Those engaging in illegal activities will be arrested.
The SA National Taxi Council refuses to participate in the EFF's planned shutdown on Monday, saying that "the economy is already messed up and we don't want to be adding more fuel to the fire".
