Iranian police said on Sunday (April 16) that over 150 businesses were shut down by the authorities in 24 hours throughout the country for not adhering to the obligation for women to wear headscarves, local media outlets reported. Headscarves are part of Iran's strict Islamic dress code, which has also become a matter of controversy.  The closure of businesses came after the implementation of a plan to deal with women who violate the country's strict Islamic dress code. 

Iran hanged 75 percent more people in 2022 that the previous years, two rights groups say.

In a further attempt to rein in the increasing number of women defying Iran's compulsory dress code, authorities are installing cameras in public places and thoroughfares to identify and penalize unveiled women, the police announced on Saturday.

Iran's morality police, which is tasked with enforcing the country's Islamic dress code, is being disbanded, the country's attorney general said, according to a media report.

Women across Iran are protesting against the hijab rules in the country and how it led to the untimely death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.
