NASA unveils 30 "Celestial Gems" from Caldwell Catalogue to mark Hubble's three decades in space – Astronomy Now

As 2020 draws to a close, NASA is celebrating the Hubble Space Telescope’s 30 years of service by releasing 30 newly processed images of galaxies, star clusters and nebulae from the Caldwell catalogue, compiled by Sir Patrick Moore, a collection of 109 amateur-accessible targets not included in Charles Messier’s familiar list. Over Hubble’s three decades in space, starting with launch in April 1990, astronomers have observed 98 of the objects on the Caldwell list and the updated catalogue now includes processed images of 87 (several targets were imaged more than once). The new composite image below is a closeup of Caldwell 45, or NGC 5248, a beautiful spiral galaxy in the constellation Boötes, that was captured by Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 and Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 in visible, infrared and ultraviolet light. The glowing red clouds indicate regions where new stars are lighting up.

Leaving this planet for vacation may not be in the cards just yet (don’t worry, the option is coming), but you can at least mentally escape for a moment, thanks to a few stunning images captured by the Hubble Space Telescope over the last 30 years.
In 2020, the Hubble telescope turned 30. To mark the milestone, NASA released dozens of unseen images taken by the instrument over the years, including galaxies, star clusters, and nebulae.
However, as NASA noted, there’s something extra special about these images, and that is the fact that all the space objects can also be seen through backyard telescopes. Some, NASA added, can even be seen through binoculars or even the naked eye. “All of these celestial objects belong to a collection known to amateur astronomers as the Caldwell catalog,” NASA explained in a blog post about the new photos. The images, it added, were compiled by British amateur astronomer and science communicator Sir Patrick Caldwell-Moore. His collection was then published by

30 Years of Capturing Space: NASA Releases New Images Caught by the Hubble Space Telescope

11 December 2020, 9:56 am EST By
The Hubble Space Telescope, which is more often simply called as Hubble, has helped thousands of astronomers make sense of the vast universe around us, capturing images of galaxies from millions of light-years away to stars and lost planets within our own system.
Hubble's 30th Anniversary
Hubble has been capturing images of space for the past three decades, and for its 30th anniversary, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration released stunning new photos caught by HST.
"We're commemorating Hubble's 30th birthday this year. Hubble is a wonderful telescope - it's in space orbiting the earth to get above the blurring effects above the Earth's atmosphere," said NASA Hubble senior project scientist, Dr. Jennifer Wiseman.
