The Gauteng Health Department has reported that 788 newborns died at Tembisa Hospital due to infections, immaturity-related complications, hypoxia and congenital anomalies since 2020.
South Africa has recorded a lower data of baby deaths in 2023 as compared to the previous year. However, Tembisa hospital is still a concern.
The causes given for the 788 baby deaths are infections, immaturity related, hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and congenital anomalies.
A report by the health ombudsman said pregnant patients were sleeping on the floor at the facility while its CEO had abandoned her duties.
