26th Annual Critics' Choice Awards Corrects Golden Globes' Wrongs and Provides Hope for Oscars | Arts

“A word of caution: Some of you may think you can get away with being naked from the waist down. Based on personal experience, I would advise against it.”
In a skit about how to look your best while teleconferencing, Roy Wood Jr. poked fun at the virtual format of the 26th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards, which took place on March 7. Following suit with other awards shows, this year’s ceremony was partially in-person and partially virtual, with Taye Diggs hosting from Santa Monica while presenters and nominees tuned in from around the globe. The digital format meant that the show’s usual pomp and circumstance were necessarily replaced with canned applause, awkwardly-paced interviews, and video call fumbles caused by faulty internet connection (celebrities, they’re just like us!). And though the disembodied “Virtual Tables'' of actors and actresses showed us firsthand that glamorous attire doesn’t ameliorate the awkwardness of Zoom socializing, the show went on, recognizing achievements across film and television over the past year.

Riverdale Premiere Review: Season Five Offers More Wild Antics — And New Possibilities | Arts

Riverdale Premiere Review: Season Five Offers More Wild Antics — And New Possibilities

The Season Five premiere of “Riverdale” asks the eternal question: Is it so bad it’s good, or is it just bad? The CW’s hottest (and, admittedly, most fun) mess is back for another season that might finally confirm whether “Riverdale” is more the former or the latter. Over the past four years, the show has evolved from a delightfully campy high school drama that delivered a stylish and satisfying murder mystery in Season One to a hodgepodge of what-am-I-watching moments whose unpredictable plots and comically awkward dialogue have risen to internet infamy and continued to dominate television discourse online. For now, however, it seems that the cults, demonic board games, covert organ farms, and musical episodes are (sort of) in the rearview mirror as Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) and friends finally wrap up their last year at Riverdale High.

'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom' Celebrates and Defends Black Art | Arts

Dir. George C. Wolfe — 4.5 Stars
Viola Davis stars as Ma Rainey in "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom."
The year is 1927, and blues legend Ma Rainey has just arrived in Chicago to record her latest album, accompanied by her Georgia Jazz Band. Outside in the midsummer heat, temperatures are rising. Inside the studio, fierce ambitions and disparate passions mean that tempers are heating up as well.
Directed by acclaimed playwright George C. Wolfe and written by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” is based on August Wilson’s 1982 play of the same name. The film stars Viola Davis as the spirited ‘Mother of the Blues’ and the late Chadwick Boseman as Levee Green, Ma’s talented but overconfident trumpeter. The film is dedicated to Boseman, who passed away in 2020; his affecting portrayal of Levee is his final film appearance.

'His House' Subverts our Expectations in Haunting Portrait of Emigration and Trauma | Arts

Dir. Remi Weekes — 4.5 Stars
Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù stars as Bol in "His House."
Remi Weekes’ 2020 horror film “His House” features its fair share of ghastly creatures — but it just may be that the actual spectres aren’t nearly as scary as the social and psychological ones. Weekes’ first feature-length film is a notable entry into the canon of socially relevant horror films, applying elements of the genre to a fresh context: political refugees attempting to make a home in a new country. Both visually and narratively compelling, “His House” is an affecting portrait of trauma, guilt, and the refugee experience.
