The True Story Behind
The Trial of the Chicago 7
Aaron Sorkin's film dramatizes one of the most unusual trials in the nation's history.
Apr 19, 2021
The comparisons between America in 1968 and America in the past 12 months are easily drawn: mass protests, brutal clashes with police, calls for racial equity, a contentious presidential election, and a general feeling that the soul of the nation is at stake. With the past feeling less and less distant, the release of Aaron Sorkin's

MUSICAL CHAIRS: Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio) announced Monday he will resign next month to take a position as the head of Ohio’s Chamber of Commerce, which, like unbuttoning the jeans after a big meal, makes Democrats’ already slim majority in the House a little bit more comfortable.

The 901: Reimagining Shelby County Schools, welcoming a new police chief

Card image cap

Good Tuesday morning Memphis, where we're learning more about the newly named police chief and awaiting a pivotal vote in Memphis City Council on the controversial Byhalia Connection pipeline.
But first, we're starting with big plans at Shelby County Schools, announced yesterday by Superintendent Joris Ray.
SCS wants to "reimagine" its footprint in Shelby County with a plan that proposes building five new schools and closing about 13 to 15 others, mostly through consolidation. The plan proposes additions to at least 13 existing schools, our Laura Testino reports.
Unveiled for the first time in a presentation to district board members Monday, the plan includes phases of work to take place over the next 10 years, through 2031. Capital projects require funding and approval from the county commission, which is scheduled to see the plan during a meeting Wednesday.

Memphis council delays vote on city law tied to oil pipeline
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — City council members in Memphis, Tennessee, delayed a scheduled vote Tuesday on a law that could make it more difficult for a company to build an oil pipeline over an aquifer that provides clean drinking water to 1 million people.
The Memphis City Council had been set to vote in its afternoon meeting on an ordinance that would establish a board to approve or deny construction of underground pipelines that transport oil or other potentially hazardous liquids near wells that pump millions of gallons of water daily from the Memphis Sand Aquifer.

The 'Grace and Frankie' actress is 'very grateful' that she doesn't need to get naked in front of anyone as the 83-year-old star is not interested in entering a new relationship.
Apr 19, 2021
Jane Fonda is "very grateful" no one has to see her naked again.
The actress isn't interested in getting into a relationship again and is happy she can stop worrying about her appearance as no one will see her up close in full any more.
She told Harper's Bazaar magazine, "I'm very grateful that I don't have to get naked in front of anybody again ever, even in candlelight."

Burt Prelutsky: The Blame Game — The Patriot Post

Once it’s served its purpose as the title of this article, I think I’ll pitch it to a TV network. I think it would be a smash. The contestants would be people who think they have a legitimate gripe against an individual, the politicians or society in general.
Dope-smoking slackers could come on America’s favorite TV show and whine about how their parents didn’t warn them against majoring in Comic Books of the 20th Century and, instead, enabled them by paying their college tuition; blacks could come on and blame white people for the fact they were raised by single uneducated women in fatherless homes; transgenders can complain about hardware stores that refuse to hire baldheaded guys with beards wearing dresses to wait on customers.

"Nomadland," the spare and fact-based drama of a group of struggling Americans living off the grid; the vivid blueswoman biopic "Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom"; the family-happy fish-out-of-water fable "Minari"; writer-director-actress Radha Blank and her biting showbiz satire "The Forty-Year-Old Version," the death-to-misogyny revenge thriller "Promising Young Woman"; and the urgent human-rights documentaries Disclosure and Welcome to Chechnya all scored more than one Dorian Award from GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics tonight via a televised special.

Earth Day programs come in many shades of green, but this year some seek rays of hope

Earth Day programs come in many shades of green, but this year some seek rays of hope
Earth Day programs come in many shades of green, but this year some seek rays of hope
There’s no one way for documentary fare to acknowledge Earth Day, but the programs generally fall into one or more of four distinct buckets in regard to the health of the planet: Depressing, vaguely hopeful, star-studded, and celebrating the natural world to highlight what we might be losing.
As shades of green go, “depressing” seems a little less prevalent this year, though it’s always an undercurrent of this annual programming wave, which seeks to vividly present nature and find rays of hope amid the gloom, while warning what will happen if the climate crisis goes unaddressed.

Jane Fonda feared 'pooping' during Washington protests

Jane Fonda feared 'pooping' during Washington protests

Jane Fonda was worried “about pooping” during her protests in Washington DC.
The ‘Klute’ actress moved to the city in 2019 to focus on her climate change protests and initiated Fire Drill Fridays – 14 weekly rallies and acts of civil disobedience on Capitol Hill – with Greenpeace, but she admitted she was relieved to find out they wouldn’t be camping out.
She told Harper’s Bazaar magazine: “[My friends now] are gung-ho gals. Like Catherine Keener and Rosanna Arquette. They were helping me.
“Where to poop became a big issue for me because I assumed I was going to be there with a bivy sack and a tent. With all the camping I’ve done and blizzards and on the top of mountains and stuff, I’ve never done it in a city.

Jane Fonda isn't sure about her film future

Jane Fonda “doesn’t know” if she’ll return to movies.
The 83-year-old actress enjoyed years of success on the big screen but in recent years has left behind her “snobbish” attitude to TV and understood her “future” lies in television because it is a better medium for older women.
She told Harper’s Bazaar magazine: “I was one of those movie people who, for a long time, was snobbish about TV.
“Aaron Sorkin offered me this ongoing role in ‘The Newsroom’ and I realized, ‘This is my future.’ I’m old.
“Television is more forgiving for older women, and so I said, ‘OK, I’m going to start paying attention.’

Jane Fonda is 'grateful' no-one will see her naked again

Jane has been married three times in the past – to Roger Vadim, Tom Hayden, and Ted Turner – and she has always been happy to “give herself over” to her partner’s lives and interests in order to learn new things.
She said: “Part of the reason I get into a relationship with a man is because I feel that he can take me down a new path.
“I’m attracted to people who can teach me things and whose lives are different from mine, and so I give myself over to that.
“First of all, I want to please him. That’s a problem. When I married Ted – I mean, marrying Ted is like marrying 15 people – you have to learn how to hunt, so I did. You have to learn how to fly-fish, so I did. He liked me to dress sexy, so I did. And so forth.

UNITE HERE Local 11 Asks Federal Agency to Ensure Chateau Marmont Complies with Loan Law
April 17, 2021 GMT
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apr 17, 2021--
Former Chateau Marmont workers asked the U.S. Small Business Administration (“SBA”) to ensure that Chateau Marmont comply with Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan requirements.
According to public records, the hotel was approved for a $1.95 million PPP loan on February 5, 2021, and as of April 13 the loan had been disbursed but not paid in full or charged off, according to the SBA. While the PPP program was intended to keep workers on payroll, only a small fraction of laid-off Chateau workers have been returned to their jobs.

Apple has announced the availability of Workouts for Pregnancy, Workouts for Older Adults, and Workouts for Beginners to make Apple Fitness+ more inclusive. The company has also added Yoga and Mindful Cooldown with trainer Jonelle Lewis, High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) with Anja Garcia, and the new Time to Walk with Jane Fonda. Each of these additions will be available from April 19.
Commenting on the expansion of Apple Fitness+, Apple’s senior director of Fitness Technologies Jay Blahnik said:
“Apple Fitness+ is integrated with Apple Watch to build on the goal of helping people live a better day by being more active. With more options for getting started, and staying active and healthy during pregnancy as well as at any age or fitness level, we hope even more people will be inspired to keep moving with our amazing team of passionate trainers.”

This comedy duo should be on Netflix: General Secretary reviewed

viabrooklyn.org, until 24 April
General Secretary is a new drama with a dull title and an off-putting poster. A pair of angry women in sombre clothing glare into the middle distance.
But the satirical premise is intriguing. What if two young females with no experience took over the world? Georgie and Cassie are working from home when they receive a mysterious message from the United Nations. A pushy German blonde appears on their screens and makes an announcement: ‘You vill now be presiding over ze vorld.’ That’s it.
And so they take control from their kitchen. The first surprise is that the newly empowered sisters don’t set about exposing the faults of male-dominated governments. Instead they panic and fret like a couple of giddy airheads. How can they run the planet smoothly when they don’t know the names of all the countries? They mug up on world events by reading heavyweight authors like George Orwell and, hilariously, Terry Eagleton. When Justin Trudeau calls to offer his congratulations they blush and tremble like lovesick teenagers.

Chelsea Clinton on Her New Podcast 'In Fact'

Paula LoboGetty Images
Like a lot of us stuck inside during quarantine, Chelsea Clinton had a fleeting thought: I should start a podcast. Unlike many of us, she actually did it. The 41-year-old mother of two and global health advocate is the host of
In Fact, a new iHeartRadio podcast that bills itself as a look into “the world of public health through shared stories.” Each week, Clinton invites guests—from politicians to celebrities to activists—to talk about crises like addiction and climate change.
“I love podcasts so much I think, in part, because I grew up listening to NPR with my mom,” Clinton tells ELLE.com. “I could probably listen to 12 straight hours of podcasts, and I saw an opportunity in this space to have a broader conversation about public health. I don’t want people to think public health is just synonymous with COVID.”
