Ban on selling ciggies will sink corner stores, says Taranaki dairy owner
RNZ The Cancer Society wants a huge reduction in the number of stores that are allowed to sell tobacco. Between 3,000 and 4,000 shops sell tobacco in New Zealand, but the Society would like that to drop as low as 200 to 300. Jane Lin has owned a dairy for 17 years, but fears proposed changes to where cigarettes can be sold will drive corner shops like hers to extinction. The High Street Dairy, in the small Taranaki town of Waitara, sells the usual dairy staples of bread and milk, as well as takeaways.
