States with higher vaccine demand will be able to request more from the feds

WASHINGTON — With demand for COVID-19 vaccines dropping in many states, the federal government is changing how those doses are allocated.
Under the new policy, any doses that a state doesn’t request from its weekly, population-based allotment will be held in a general pool, and states with higher demand can request additional shots from that surplus.
President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 advisers outlined the new policy to governors during a call Tuesday morning. Senior administration officials also described the policy to reporters during a separate conference call ahead of Biden’s remarks later in the day on the nation’s vaccination push.

Libre: Celebration

SunStar
April 23, 2021
Today, April 24, 2021, Filipinos in New Zealand congregate in Hamilton City to mark the quincentennial of Christianity in the Philippines. This follows the launching mass in Hamilton on March 13 with Bishop Steve Lowe and the masses on April 4 in Auckland and Wellington to mark the first mass in Limasawa. All these activities were featured in articles written by Rowena Orejana and published in NZ Catholic, the Catholic newspaper of New Zealand. With the Covid-19 virus effectively contained in New Zealand, Filipinos have come in full force in events organized to commemorate the quincentennial.
In today’s celebration, the Waikato Filipino Association and the Filipino Chaplaincy of the Catholic Diocese of Hamilton have joined hands hoping to make a memorable program guided by the theme “Gifted to Give.” I’ve attended most of the preparations and am amazed by the commitment and dedication of people who have volunteered to various tasks.

North Carolina joins other states in halting use of Johnson & Johnson vaccine following six severe reactions, one death

North Carolina health care providers are being asked to pause use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine following severe reactions in six women — none of them from North Carolina.
Out of an abundance of caution, use of the vaccine will be paused in North Carolina until the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control can complete an investigation and give further advice, said Dr. Mandy Cohen, Secretary of the  North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, in a Tuesday press conference.
“Today’s actions are the result of a vaccine safety system that is working,” Cohen said. “When a problem was identified, even in just six cases, the system was able to let providers know they should pause use of the vaccine for further study. North Carolina is following the FDA and CDC advice.”
