How French import Call My Agent made me forget about COVID monotony and became my happy place

Call My Agent.(Netflix)
Warm Blanket is a series of personal essays from Canadian writers and artists reflecting on the pop culture that has brought them comfort and coziness during one year of the pandemic.
No matter how many critical accolades or recommendations from my peers a TV series gets, I've often struggled with taking the leap into a new one.
Who are these people on my screen and
why would I want to hang out with them for so many hour-long blocks? During the colder months of my lockdown blues, this reluctance to invest into unfamiliar universes and character dynamics has mostly kept me to just binging hours of unchallenging content. With little to no energy, attention span or hunger to broaden my horizons, my ideal comfort viewing experience has mostly amounted to watching drag queen Jaymes Mansfield transform cheap wigs into better wigs or custom doll-making videos on repaint extraordinaire HeXtian's channel.

You don't have to head to a movie theater to watch this year's crop of Best Picture nominees. With only a few exceptions, all of the films nominated for Oscar's highest honor are available to stream from your home. And you don't have to restrict yourself to the current nominees: in the streaming age, almost all of the Best Picture winners from the past nine decades are a mere click away on digital video platforms or streaming services. Whether you want to revisit your favorite winners or fill your personal gaps in Oscar history, Yahoo Entertainment’s comprehensive streaming guide has you covered.

These 36 movies earned rare 5-star ratings. Here's why — and where you can watch them

These 36 movies earned rare 5-star ratings. Here's why — and where you can watch them
Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic
The Arizona Republic doesn't hand out a lot of five-star reviews. That's as it should be. It's a rating reserved for only the best movies. Not perfect films — once you get past "Citizen Kane," perfect is a pretty tough, if not impossible, standard to meet. But some movies come awfully close, and those are the ones that we recognize here.
Our rating system says five stars means "great." While that's accurate, it only scratches the surface of why these are the few movies that stand above the rest. Whether comedy or drama or some combination of the two, these are movies will not disappoint.

'Keep an Eye Out' Review: Quentin Dupieux's Police Procedural Is More Tame Than Transgressive
The 'Rubber' director's first fully French production doesn't exactly find him at home.
Michael Nordine, provided by
FacebookTwitterEmail
Director: Quentin Dupieux
With: Benoît Poelvoorde, Grégoire Ludig, Marc Fraize, Anaïs Demoustier, Orelsan, Philippe Duquesne, Jacky Lambert, Jeanne Rosa, Vincent Grass, Nahel Ange, July Messéan, Johnny Malle, Laurent Nicolas, Michel Hazanavicius, Pedro Winter.
In the pantheon of love-them-or-hate-them auteurs, Quentin Dupieux resides somewhere in the middle — neither as provocative as a Gaspar Noé nor as clever in his absurdity as a Yorgos Lanthimos. His latest, “Keep an Eye Out,” isn’t actually his latest: Distributed abroad three years ago, its stateside release follows those of 2019’s “Deerskin” and last year’s “Mandibles.” Devotees of the French filmmaker (who also goes by Mr. Oizo) may find “Keep an Eye Out” worth the wait, but anyone not already on board with Dupieux’s brand of offbeat humor and forays into the surreal can safely ignore the title’s advice.

Netflix
Film, UK – out 3 March
Amy Poehler’s coming-of-age dramedy about a teenager who launches a feminist club to fight the patriarchy in her high school is produced like a slick piece of popular music, with all the easy listening/viewing vibes that suggests. Adapted from Jennifer Mathieu’s novel, Moxie is so indebted to the rhythms and grooves of other movies and shows that you can predict not just certain plot points, but certain
lines before they happen; like when you feel a chord change coming in a catchy song.

How will the Netflix French series Call My Agent! fare in its Indian remake?

France 2/Netflix
An insider’s account of show business that isn’t about sex, scandal and sordidness? It’s possible and hugely entertaining too, as the series
Call My Agent! proves.
Originally made for French television,
Call My Agent! is being globally streamed by Netflix. As the title indicates, the show isn’t about actors – although each episode features some of French cinema’s biggest names – but the men and women who manage their careers, keep them out of trouble or sometimes get them into a soup.
The witty and insightful series revolves around the fictional ASK talent management agency in Paris. In the first episode, ASK’s founder dies, leaving behind debt and a bunch of squabbling associates.

Best French Shows on Netflix — 'Lupin' & 'Call My Agent!' Review

the latter, whose fourth and final season dropped on the streaming platform last week, has been around since 2015 but is finally getting the international attention it deserves.
The acclaim is warranted; these two shows are excellent. Plus there's also the perpetual American obsession with all things French and especially anything with Paris as a backdrop, which is even more wanderlust-inducing during this era of quarantine and border lockdowns. This truth undoubtedly explains

Two French shows have become huge international hits this month. Here's why you should watch'Lupin' and'Call My Agent!'.
Until very recently, French content on Netflix left
un petit peu to be desired. It hasn't been a barren landscape, exactly, but the genre hadn't quite reached the level of American success as shows and films from some other foreign nations (see: Korean dramas and the Spanish hit

The Very Serious Appeal of Call My Agent

Card image cap

Call My Agent
Courtesy of Netflix
In the days immediately following the publication of the not-exactly-positive review of Netflix’s
Emily in Paris I wrote for this very website last October, friends and strangers alike had one burning question: Had I watched the other Parisian, media-centric comedy on Netflix,
Call My Agent, which was set at a chic agency for actors and directors? It was authentically, actually French, instead of cod French, they all said; it was genuinely funny, and the characters with “style” dressed stylishly, and nobody said anything about their “
coq” or mistranslated the word “
ringarde.” In addition, it had cameos from many major actors, playing themselves: Juliette Binoche tumbling down the stairs at Cannes, or Monica Bellucci bemoaning her perpetual singledom, or Béatrice Dalle furiously storming out of a gratuitous nude scene and then hiding in a convent. Isabelle Huppert stayed on for two full episodes in the third season, sending up her reputation as a workaholic, which if you are a TV show about actors is a flex roughly equivalent to that of getting Jesus to sign on for a two-episode arc in your Bible epic. It was gentle but sophisticated, clever but not taxing, low-stakes enough to be soothing but well written enough to ensure that you were always thoroughly invested in its principals—the leonine, ruthless Mathias; the fey and hilarious Hervé; the bumbling, hirsute Gabriel; the chic and horny and ambitious Andréa; et cetera, et cetera.

Call My Agent! Will Gompertz reviews Netflix's French comedy drama series ★★★★★

BBC News

If history judges this to be a golden age of television overflowing with magnificent creations and wonderful spectacle, then Call My Agent! will be considered among the epoch's Crown Jewels.
The exquisitely crafted, beautifully written, brilliantly acted French comedy-drama series about life in a Parisian talent agency is close to perfection, unlike its protagonists who are marvellously flawed.
The show, which started in 2015, has developed over four series and five years from a cult hit into a lockdown sensation.
Season Four has just launched on Netflix, which will be the programme's last hurrah apparently. Let's hope the producers' word is as reliable as the double-crossing, endlessly conniving mavericks running the fictional ASK agency. It would be a great shame to consign such a fabulous cast of unbelievably believable, loveably unlovable characters to the back-catalogue just when they've become a core part of so many people's on-screen friendship group.

The fourth and final season of Call My Agent, which originally premiered in France last year, drops on U.S. Netflix this week. Netflix
What if the masquerade of the entertainment industry was viewed from an altogether different vantage point than Hollywood, for a change? French
cinéma is often considered arty or cerebral fare made by weirdo auteurs, yet the system of wheeling and dealing is just as extant in the Parisian entertainment industry as in Los Angeles. The television show
Call My Agent! presents precisely this cutthroat perspective. Tonally, the show is never wincingly cynical like Ricky Gervais’

Call My Agent (on Netflix now)
The French have not been revered for their comedy on this side of the Channel since the days of Georges Feydeau, but Fanny Herrero's sublime hit series, set in a chic but hyper-stressed Parisian talent agency, is a fleet-footed delight. The fourth and final instalment lands on Netflix this Thursday, so now is the perfect time to indulge in the perfectly tousled lives of Andrea, Mathias, Gabriel and Arlette, as they lurch from one A-list disaster to the next. There's a good reason that the stars - Juliette Binoche, Monica Bellucci, Jean Reno and Jean Dujardin among them - have queued up for guest roles.
