How 'unhung villain' was said to be third most senior officer in City of London police

The crime of armed robbery had been 'brought to a state almost of perfection' in the 1970s thanks to police corruption, a new documentary reveals.
The final episode in BBC series Bent Coppers: Crossing the Line of Duty, which airs this evening, reveals how one of London's most senior police officers was believed to have helped suppress investigations and even took cuts of robbers' ill-gotten gains.
Commander Hugh Moore, who was the third most senior officer in the City of London Police, was allegedly 'the greatest villain unhung', a fellow corrupt officer said.
Moore, who died from heart failure in 1993 while attempting an arrest, was described as a 'greedy b*****d' by bent detective Phil Cuthbert, who talked of a £175,000 robbery on the Daily Express's payroll van in 1976 being a 'Hughie Moore job'.

Scotland Yard DCI who inspired Prime Suspect cries as she recalls abuse after fighting corruption

Former Detective Chief Inspector Jackie Malton, 70, was speaking in new BBC documentary series Bent Coppers.
The three-episode series tells the story of institutionalised corruption in the Metropolitan and City of London police in the 1970s.
Ms Malton retired from the Met in 1997 after a 30-year career before going on to advise producers of police television shows.
Prime Suspect creator Lynda La Plante spoke to Ms Malton for hours to create no-nonsense officer DCI Jane Tennison.
The character was portrayed by Helen Mirren in the long-running show before La Plante released a book of the same name.
Speaking in the final Bent Coppers episode, which airs tonight, she told how 'everybody just stood up and walked out' after she entered the police canteen following the suspension of a fellow officer suspected of planting drugs on suspects.

A very watchable doc cashing in on Line of Duty: BBC2's Bent Coppers reviewed

BBC2
Sky Atlantic
If you’re after an exciting, twisty programme about police corruption that doesn’t also feel a bit like sitting an exam in
Line of Duty studies, then
Bent Coppers: Crossing the Line of Dutycould well hit the spot. As both the timing and subtitle not so much suggest as bellow, this three-part documentary series is an obvious attempt to cash in on its fictional counterpart. Happily, though, it’s a successful one.
In Wednesday’s second episode the focus was on 1970s Soho, where the most reliable way to make a fortune was by opening what the narrator Philip Glenister called, in suitably 1970s argot, ‘dirty bookshops’. Of course, there were certain overheads involved, like rent and huge bribes to the police. But once they were sorted, the apparently fathomless human desire for pornography did the rest. Granted, the police would occasionally raid your shop for form’s sake. On the other hand, you could pick up the confiscated material a couple of days later from the local nick.

The ORIGINAL Line of Duty: How 1970s Scotland Yard chief took on 'bent detectives'

Interested in 'one thing, and one thing only', Line of Duty's Ted Hastings leads the AC-12 anti-corruption squad to weed out 'bent coppers' in the hit BBC series.
But while his team's mission to find the elusive 'H' continues to grip millions, a new documentary tells the true, revelatory story of corruption in the British police.
The upcoming second episode of Bent Coppers: Crossing the Line of Duty sheds light on how corrupt members of the Metropolitan Police ran a 'protection racket' covering sex shops in London's Soho in the 1970s.
Officers from the Obscene Publications Squad, led by corrupt officer Bill Moody, carried out periodic raids to make it appear as though they were clamping down on the illegal sale of hardcore pornography, whilst continuing to take bribes from shop owners.

Our to the biggest Netflix TV shows not to miss this week

On Demand - Stowaway (Netflix, from Thu)
If the cast is anything to go by, this sci-fi movie should be a real winner - Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim, Toni Collette and Shamier Anderson all feature. Directed by Brazilian film-maker Joe Penna, who also co-wrote the script with Ryan Morrison, it focuses on the crew of a spaceship en route to Mars. However, someone has accidentally stowed away, causing severe damage to the craft's life support systems. As their resources begin to dwindle, those on board must find a way to deal with their new circumstances or face certain death. While the ship's commander and biologist favour a solution based on clinical logic, a medical researcher with a very different idea tries to stand up for what she believes in.
