Saturday is National Reading Day, but weâre celebrating locally a day earlier by surprising a local elementary school with hundreds of books. 23ABCâS Kristin Vartan has more about our company's pledge to literacy.

A lot of us at 23ABC love to read,but we also know that access to books is a privilege that we donât think about on a daily basis.
âItâs that third grade reading milestone weâre looking for, because once they go from third to fourth grade, Thatâs when they go from learning to read to reading to learn,â Laura Lollar Wolfe, Executive Director of the Kern Literacy Council said.

In Honor of National Reading Day, 23ABC is celebrating by donating hundreds of books to Long Fellow Elementary for their students to take home.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KERO) â In Honor of National Reading Day, 23ABC is celebrating by donating hundreds of books to Longfellow Elementary for their students to take home.
For the past five years 23ABC along with the company's Scripps Howard Foundation, the Kern Literacy Council, and Scholastic have been teaming up to help change that by promoting reading as a fun family activity. Itâs a project close to our hearts, and to date the project has gifted a total of 2000 books to Kern County kids from kindergarten to third grade.
