After an awards season which has dragged on even longer than some of the nominated films, the Oscars finally take place this Sunday.
The 2021 race kicked off last September, when Nomadland became an early favourite at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals.
The subsequent awards season has been prolonged due to the pandemic, with this weekend's Academy Awards taking place two months later than usual.

Taxi Driver: 20th Anniversary Edition movie review (1996)

Card image cap

Are you talkin' to me? Well, I'm the only one here.
Travis Bickle in "Taxi Driver" It is the last line, "Well, I'm the only one here," that never gets quoted. It is the truest line in the film. Travis Bickle exists in "Taxi Driver" as a character with a desperate need to make some kind of contact somehow - to share or mimic the effortless social interaction he sees all around him, but does not participate in.
The film can be seen as a series of his failed attempts to connect, every one of them hopelessly wrong. Bickle (Robert De Niro) asks a girl out on a date and takes her to a porno movie. He sucks up to a political candidate and ends by alarming him. He tries to make small talk with a Secret Service agent. He wants to befriend a child prostitute, but scares her away. He is so lonely that when he asks, "Who you talkin' to?" he is addressing himself in a mirror.

The real Hannibal Lecter: how a psychopathic doctor inspired Silence of the Lambs

Card image cap

'He had a certain elegance': Hannibal Lecter was inspired by a real killer
In 1963, while on assignment to Topo Chico Penitentiary in Nuevo León, Mexico to interview a murderer, a 23-year-old journalist called Thomas Harris got chatting to the prison doctor. He intended to ask him about saving the life of the killer, a Texan named Dykes Askew Simmons, after he was shot in a botched escape attempt, but instead he found that it was the doctor who did most of the questioning.
“Mr. Harris, how did you feel when you looked at Simmons?... Would you say the sunglasses add an element of symmetry to his face?... Do you think that Simmons was tormented on the school playground because he was disfigured?... Have you seen pictures of the victims?... Would you say they were attractive youngsters?”

Film of the Week Promising Young Woman

Card image cap

NOMINATED for five Oscars, this part dark comedy, part rom-com, but mostly wonderfully refreshing kick-ass revenge thriller sets a new bar for the genre, and its themes resonate in the wake of the Me Too movement.
Just as the The Accused (starring Jodie Foster) made us re-evaluate how we view rape victims — women dressing and acting sexily is not an invitation for men to sexually abuse them — this film holds a mirror up to the view that getting blind drunk on a night out means that “you are asking for it,” and that guys getting girls intoxicated to “seduce them” is a normal part of life.

Review: Small town misery is alive and dreary in 'Mare of Easttown'

Review: Small town misery is alive and dreary in 'Mare of Easttown'
Kate Winslet stars as a detective drowning in dysfunction
Tom Long
Mare is a mess.
Her son committed suicide. Her ex-husband lives next door with his soon-to-be new wife. Her grandson is showing signs of mental illness. Her live-in disagreeable mother is full of opinions.
Oh, and she’s a police detective in a small northeastern town where a girl has been missing for a year, and she’s getting the blame.
As “Mare of Easttown” progresses, Mare (Kate Winslet) keeps getting more miserable. Which pretty much goes along with the perpetually rainy-gray city itself. Everybody in Easttown seems to be a trainwreck. Junkie kids, prostitute single mothers, garden variety drunks and lost souls. It’s no accident that the only baby in this show has a serious ear infection.

Aaron Rodgers, Shailene Woodley talk 'cuddle time' in sweet interview

Card image cap

Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley look the happiest they've been at the happiest place on earth.
The couple's love was on full display as soon as the interviewer asked, "What is one thing that always makes you smile?" Rodgers, 37, and Woodley, 29, instantly pointed at each other.
"This guy," Woodley swooned, while Rodgers added: "You."
The lovefest didn't stop there. Dressed in a green baseball cap adorned with signature Disney ears, Woodley called her football beau "so cute, baby." Rodgers added, "You always make me smile."
When asked how they unwind after a long day, Woodley said she loves a bath and "a good glass of wine." Rodgers, who clearly had his fiancée on his mind, felt rebuffed.

7 Oscars 2021 lessons: Minari is the real winner, women directors rule, diversity isn't quite there yet and more

Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari, featuring (from left) Steven Yeun, Alan Kim, Yuh-jung Youn, Yeri Han and Noel Cho, has six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
Sundance Institute/TNS
There can be no doubt this has been the strangest awards season in the history of cinema (as well as the longest, thanks to the Oscars being forced to move to April because of the pandemic).
Ordinarily, the idea of a couple of extra months’ worth of actors “campaigning” is enough to make even the most dedicated film fan weep into their copy of Vanity Fair. But this season has seen some real moments for celebration and contemplation, despite cinemas being shut all over the world for much of the past 12 months.

Conservative PAC launches petition to block unconditional release of John Hinckley Jr.

Citizens for the Republic say removing any restrictions from Hinckley would be a mistake.
“The least we can do to honor the memory of President Reagan and Jim Brady is to make sure Hinckley remains under some kind of supervision,” the group said in a statement, referring to James Brady, the White House press secretary who was also wounded in the shooting.
“Let’s not forget that Hinckley nearly killed a sitting president and that Jim Brady’s death was eventually ruled a homicide from the injuries Hinckley caused. The Left has already used the attempt on Reagan as a political football when a Clinton-appointed judge released him from his hospital five years ago; it’s imperative people know what’s going on before an even bigger mistake is made,” the statement continued.

From a pajama-clad Jodie Foster to the teary “Minari” child star Alan S. Kim, they managed to make their acceptance speeches work from home.

Even at the best of times, making an award acceptance speech isn’t easy. It’s the most scrutinized moment of your career, you’re bound to forget the name of somebody you love, and you’re five feet from a trigger-happy orchestra that is trained to turn on you like a firing squad.

The news that the Arclight Cinemasare closing permanently — part of the larger closure that includes Pacific Theaters in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic — hit the film industry, and the greater Los Angeles community, like a shockwave.
Filmmaker John August was one of the first to tweet about the news: “Oh no. ArcLight Hollywood is my favorite place to see movies.”

Jodie Foster makes a powerful (and stylish) case for going grey
A new study reveals grey hair can make women feel less competent, yet Jodie Foster proves that grey has never looked better - here's how

A recent study of 80 women, published by the Journal of Women and Ageing found that women who went grey to be more 'authentic' employed other beauty practices to avoid being stigmitized as "old" and less competent by society.
Well, if anyone proves that theory wrong, it's Jodie Foster in The Mauritanian.
Suited up with a chic glossy bob that is cleverly accessorised with deep red lips and nails to match, Foster appears both elegant - and powerful - in her role as defence attorney Nancy Hollander.

Best 90s movies that are still all the rage

Card image cap

In the early 90s, we didn’t have Starbucks and
Pearl Jam was still known as Mookie Blaylock. Huh? We didn’t use the Internet for everything (yet), and AOL was king. Google wasn’t even invented until 1998 (though didn’t officially become a verb until 2006); instead, we had Ask Jeeves, Alta Vista, Netscape, Lycos, Earthlink, MindSpring, or Yahoo (among others) to search the mysterious, new World Wide Web.
We also saw the birth of email, or Email, or e-mail, or E-mail; yes, it took a while until we settled on a universally accepted spelling for the abbreviation for electronic mail.  AOL Instant Messenger was the first chat-like service to exist in the mainstream and it was life-changing. We could chat friends and make plans to go to happy hour after work right from our work computers without ever picking up the phone. We loved it.

Thunder Force Review
Thunder Force wants us to laugh at genre tropes, but this crude and unoriginal dreck is comedy Kryptonite.
Shazam! with 40-year-old women?”
The Zachary Levi-starring pic is a favorite among DC fans (it earned $365 million worldwide), so it makes sense to try and recreate that magic by spinning the formula into a Melissa McCarthy comedy. But while
Thunder Force has a few memorable moments, it lacks the wit of Henry Gayden’s script, which was the main ingredient that resulted in
Shazam! being such a winner.
Ben Falcone takes writing, directing and producing credits on this formulaic piece, which relies too heavily on the fish-out-of-water comedy of
