I have this really bad personality defect. Well, there are many, but this one’s so obvious I probably should do something about it. Counseling. Reprogramming. Mortification.
It troubles my family members and friends because I keep what was known in the olden days as “bad company.”
You see, I consort with liberals and conservatives ... even though it’s not always easy and nowadays it’s practically verboten. Quite honestly, it would be easier to pick a side and just delete half of my address book, but I can’t do that because you never know when I might need some good legal advice from my liberal lawyer or a good colonoscopy from my conservative gastroenterologist.

Joe Pisani: A business card can feed the fishbowl, or the ego

Someone asked me for a business card last week. It took some searching, but I finally found one that was faded, wrinkled and dog-eared, hidden in my wallet where it was growing mold. With all the viruses and bacteria around, I should have sanitized it. Who knows what kind of outbreak it might cause.
I’ve reached the point in life where I don’t like to hand out business cards because I don’t want people bothering me. Nevertheless, I still have something to offer society, and a business card lets me stay in the game, so from time to time I pawn one off even though it looks like a historic artifact that survived the Great Recession.

During the COVID lockdown, I was so stressed — along with two-thirds of America — that I developed gastritis. I tried everything to cure it, including deep breathing, shallow breathing, meditation, contemplation, cabbage juice, kefir, Prilosec and a bunch of other treatments I never heard of or want to hear about again. Did I mention hot baths in lavender Epsom salt?

While I was driving through New England after 10 inches of snow fell, I passed two young people who skid down the hill and plowed into three garbage cans before hitting a fence post.
They looked OK. They looked better than the car. They must have been OK because instead of checking her boyfriend for bruises or picking up the garbage or trying to get the car out of the ditch, the girl was taking selfies with her cellphone.

If you’ve been following the news, at least the celebrity news — which is the only news worth following for pure excitement and tragic irony — you’ve probably read at least 21 times about Hilaria, the wife of Alec Baldwin, who was accused of impersonating a Spanish person for 10 years.

I’ve been blessed. Or maybe cursed. Five times during the holiday season, I received wonderful gifts on the front door step, delivered by Amazon, FedEx, UPS and the U.S. Postal Service. There was one problem. They were for someone else.
What the heck are you people doing out there? Didn’t you ever hear of the Global Positioning System? Check addresses please. With all these fool-proof technologies, how can so many gifts be delivered to the wrong address and why does it have to be my house? If Santa can get it right, you can too.
