During Wetaskiwin Council’s Committee-of-the-Whole Monday, Wetaskiwin RCMP Insp. John Spaans presented the Quarter 3 report for January to December 2022, which showed persons crimes were down 13 per cent over the last year and down nine per cent over the past five years. There has also been a 28 per cent drop in other Criminal Code offences. Property crimes continue to be an issue, however.

Having a full complement of officers helps distribute the workload, said Spaans, noting the municipal detachment generated 8,949 files last year, an increase from 8,615 in 2021. This includes calls for service from the public, as well as self-generated and proactive files. It does not include Provincial Traffic Units.
