With mail voting underway and primary election day three weeks away, voters will have an opportunity during a forum this week to learn more about the candidates in several local races. The League of Women Voters of Centre County will host Primary Candidates’ Night at 7 p.m. Thursday. Candidates will participate via Zoom and the forum will be broadcast live on C-NET channel 7 and online at cnet1.org. Only candidates in opposed primaries are invited to participate in Candidates’ Night. The Bellefonte Area School District has decided to retire the Red Raiders mascot imagery after months of debate and extensive research by the school district. Next up is a meeting to discuss and vote on the continued use of the Red Raiders nickname to represent the district. The Native American imagery and Red Raiders moniker that is used by the district’s sports teams have been hotly debated since last June, when some community members asked for removal, calling it culturally insensitive. This came as many social justice protests took place around the country during the spring and summer of 2020. ....

Now, it has a location. For the first time since Rogers Stadium was renovated, the district is planning for a graduation ceremony at the stadium. This comes following a survey that was sent to parents last week. At Tuesday’s school board meeting, high school principal Michael Fedisson announced that Bellefonte is planning for an outdoor graduation ceremony at the stadium something that hasn’t happened since the Class of 2016 celebrated on the natural grass. “It seems like most people want to have a more traditional graduation,” Fedisson explained. “At this point, the stadium capacity is at a 50 percent limit. I think we’re going to get (around) four to six tickets per graduate.” ....
TAMMIE BURNAFORD BELLEFONTE The Bellefonte Area School District has its new superintendent and it’s a familiar face. The Bellefonte school board voted to remove the interim tag from Tammie Burnaford and make her the district’s permanent superintendent during Tuesday night’s board meeting. The vote was unanimous. Burnaford received a three-year contract from the district. According to the contract, Burnaford will be paid $142,011 for the first year of the contract, which covers March 9, 2021 to March 8, 2022. According to the terms of the contract, “increases to Burnaford’s salary shall be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of the then in force Act 93 Agreement.” ....
