The Islamic Republic of Iran has arrested three more women journalists, bringing the number of detained women journalists to 16, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) alerts. In total, 55 journalists have been arrested for media-related activities since the start of the Mahsa Amini protests in September. Twenty-seven of these journalists remain behind bars, while the others have been released on bail awaiting sentencing. RSF calls on the Iranian authorities to release the detained journalists immediately and drop all charges against them.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is appalled by the 18-year sentence (10 years in prison plus eight years suspended) that an Iranian journalist received on 10 January, in what is the harshest sentence passed on any journalist since protests about Mahsa Amini’s death in police custody began four months ago. He and all of the other journalists imprisoned in Iran must be freed at once, RSF says.

Three of the four journalists sentenced to death by Houthi rebels in 2020 were tortured in custody for at least 45 days.

AL-MUKALLA: A Yemeni human rights group and relatives have accused the Iran-backed Houthis of torturing and killing a prisoner of war and then for years concealing his death from family. For 45 days, journalist Tawfik al-Mansouri, detained in Sana'a, was tortured. He and two other journalists sentenced to death in 2020 by the Houthis were locked up in solitary confinement and abused for several weeks. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) denounces the torture and alerts the United Nations Special Representative for Yemen that the hostage journalists’ lives are in danger.
