INTA to hold events marking International Women’s Day
– Last week INTA’s Women’s LeadershIP Initiative released a report and best practice toolkit to empower women in the IP field to develop strong leadership skills and advance their careers. In the run up to International Women’s Day on 8 March it has revealed further plans to call for greater representation and advancement of women in IP by hosting events around the world. It will hold virtual discussion forums, entitled Championing Women Leaders: The Road Forward, in various time zones. Facilitated by women leaders, the one-hour forums will discuss the implementation of best practices to foster career advancement and leadership opportunities for women. Meanwhile, later in March the association’s virtual What’s Next for Brands: A View from Europe Conference, will include table topic discussions on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), work-life integration, and culture exchange. Additionally, on 30 March and 13 April, INTA’s Brand & New podcast will focus on the legacy of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, including an interview with Professor Jane Ginsburg, an IP scholar and the daughter of the late Justice. IAM opens search for 2021’s inductees into the IP Hall of Fame – IAM has announced that the annual search to identify outstanding individuals to induct into the IP Hall of Fame is underway. Established in 2006, the IP Hall of Fame honours individuals – living or dead – who have had a major and positive impact on the IP landscape, whether as a corporate executive, dealmaker, lawyer, academic, policy maker, administrator, or in any other capacity. Nominations can be made here until 14 April. Once the nomination window closes, all valid nominations will be sent (anonymously) to the IP Hall of Fame Academy, whose members – composed of past inductees and celebrated IP thought-leaders – will vote on which of the nominees to induct this year. LVMH buys 50% stake in Jay-Z’s champagne brand – LVMH has acquired a 50% stake in Armand de Brignac, a Champagne producer owned by Jay-Z, reports
Bloomberg. The artist started investing in the brand in 2006, and in 2014 he bought out Sovereign Brands’s stake in the business. “Armand de Brignac breaks barriers and reflects contemporary luxury, while preserving the tradition of the Champagne terroirs,” Philippe Schaus, chief executive officer of LVMH’s Moet Hennessy drinks unit, said in a statement. Jay-Z’s brand is set to benefit from the luxury-marketing expertise and distribution network of LVMH, something that will be especially welcome considering the hit the Champagne market took during the pandemic.

Authorities provide update on Super Bowl anti-counterfeiting efforts – Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) has announced the seizure of more than 169,000 counterfeit sports-related items over the past year, worth an estimated $45 million. This announcement was made during a press conference in Tampa, Florida, in the run up to this year’s Super Bowl and reflected on the Operation Team Player initiative. The programme (run by the HSI-led National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, in collaboration with Customs and Border Protection, the NFL and other major sports leagues), is an ongoing annual operation that begins after every Super Bowl and runs through the next one, targeting international shipments of counterfeit sports merchandise into the United States.  Since September HSI agents have also teamed with industry, CBP, Tampa police officers, and other partner agencies to identify flea markets, retail outlets and street vendors selling counterfeit goods during the week leading up to Super Bowl LV. “Operation Team Player is the most successful and long-standing collaborative effort to protect US consumers from the sale of counterfeit sports merchandise and tickets,” said NFL Vice President of Legal Affairs, Dolores DiBella. “The NFL is grateful for the diligent and tireless work of agents and officers from the IPR Center, HSI, CBP, and Tampa area law enforcement who have undertaken anti-counterfeiting measures that protect fans not only at Super Bowl LV, but all season long.” (

Frasers Group ups investment in Hugo Boss – Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group has raised its stake in Hugo Boss, reports
Bloomberg. The UK retailer now controls a 15.2% “strategic position” in the Germany luxury fashion company. It is the latest investment that Ashley has made in retailers both in Europe and the United States – the group already having its hand in Mulberry Group, Studio Retail Group and French Connection Group, among others. Frasers Group’s investment in competitors is a strategic move that aims to “elevate” its own brands. “Holding significant positions in glossy fashion houses, such as Hugo Boss or Mulberry, can help cement their supplier relationships with Frasers’ brands – particularly its Flannels and House of Fraser luxury department stores,” says a Bloomberg analyst.
