Pacers News: High profile workout comes just ahead of 2021 NBA draft

With the NBA draft just over a week away, the Pacers held their highest-profile workout of the pre-draft process on Wednesday. Today’s group was made up of Chris Duarte, Corey Kispert, Ziaire Williams, Sam Hauser, Cam Thomas and McKinley Wright. The Pacers have three picks in the draft on July 29, Nos. 13, 54 and 60, and Duarte, Kispert and Williams are all projected to be selected between the lottery and mid-first round.
Kispert made the most of his final season at Gonzaga. His scoring jumped five points to 18.6, he averaged a whole extra rebound to put him at five per game and he chipped in 1.8 assists and a steal per contest. Kispert has been called the best shooter in the draft by many scouts, and being less than three percent from a 50/40/90 year makes it hard to disagree. Kispert returned to Gonzaga for his senior year after initially declaring for the draft last year, and it seems to have paid off for him.

Colts tight end Jack Doyle is looking forward to getting back to a Lucas Oil Stadium filled with passionate fans after a season thwarted by COVID-19.
“I love that we are starting at home,” he said Wednesday. “I can’t wait to hear that place rock.”
During a virtual lunch interview hosted by Indiana Sports Corp, the two-time Pro-Bowler, a 2008 graduate of Cathedral High School, talked about what Indianapolis means to him, his best memories of his football career, and what he’s learned from being around different members of the Colts organization.
Less than a week before the start of training camp, Doyle said he was eager to get the season underway. He applauded the selfless nature of the team’s offense, saying it’s what distinguishes the Colts from other teams.

Pacers host another workout with nine days until the 2021NBA draft

The Pacers held another round of pre-draft workouts Tuesday with just nine days to go before the NBA draft.
This group of Pacers' prospects included Marcus Garrett, A.J. Lawson, John Petty Jr., Yves Pons, Aamir Simms, and D.J. Stewart Jr. The Pacers currently have three picks for next Thursday’s draft, numbers 13, 54 and 60. Most in this group are projected as second-round picks.
Garrett and Lawson headlined the workout at the Ascension St. Vincent practice facility.
A.J. Lawson is a 6-foot-6 shooting guard out of South Carolina by way of Ontario, Canada. He has paced the Gamecocks in scoring over the past two seasons. He averaged 16.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game this past year as a junior on his way to second team All-SEC honors. Now, after initially declaring for the 2019 and 2020 drafts, Lawson is ready to give the NBA his best shot.

When the Colts took Edgerrin James No. 4 overall in the 1999 NFL Draft, many people thought it was a mistake. The Colts had recently traded Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk, and Ricky Williams, the Heisman Trophy winner that year, seemed like the obvious choice to be the first running back taken in the draft.
Hall of Fame General Manager Bill Polian had other plans.
James, the only player to ever lead the NFL in rushing in his first two seasons, made Polian look like a genius almost immediately and, on Aug. 7, James will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

It's always fun when longtime NBA players share incredible stories about some of the game’s greatest players.
During a recent episode of "Knuckleheads with Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles," 12-year NBA veteran Jamal Mashburn shared a story about an encounter he had with Larry Bird in 1992 when USA Basketball brought several college standouts, including Mashburn, Allan Houston, Rodney Rogers, Eric Montross, Chris Webber, Bobby Hurley and Grant Hill, to scrimmage the Dream Team.

It all started when Bird, well known for his trash talk, approached Mashburn and Chris Webber and asked if they were “those college guys.” When Mashburn and Webber responded that they were Bird “looked at (them) and said ‘get some (expletive) rest, it's gonna be a long week.”
