RSPCA reveals WA's hotspots for animal cruelty

Animals with insufficient shelter 639
Note: Many of the reports received by RSPCA WA in 2020 included allegations of multiple offences involving multiple animals
Overall, complaints were down from 7022 in 2019 to 6620 in 2020.
RSPCA CEO, Ben Cave, said while any decline in cruelty reporting was a positive and welcome sign, it was disappointing to see reports of ill-treatment remain steady (1% increase) and reports about dogs in hot cars jump 14%, compared to 2019.
In total, 10,271 offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2002 were reported last year.
“Looking at these numbers, it can be easy to feel disheartened, but it’s important to remember that every cruelty report received is a person speaking up and being a voice for animals,” he said.

Fail to Comply with Direction at Merriwa
A 51-year-old Merriwa man has been fined $10,000 (plus costs) over a series of COVID-19 self-quarantine breaches in January this year.
The man had flown to Perth from Brisbane on Thursday, 7 January 2021. On Friday, 8 January 2021 following the COVID-19 outbreak in Queensland, anyone who had arrived in Western Australia from Queensland since 2 January 2021 was required to self-quarantine for 14 days.
The man nominated an address in Merriwa to self-quarantine until 21 January 2021.
Between Thursday, 14 January and Friday, 15 January 2021 the man breached the direction on three separate locations; twice when he drove with a family member to local shops and once when he visited the house of the family member over 100 kilometres away. At no time did the man or family member wear a mask.

In response to the reported case of COVID-19 in a West Australian quarantine hotel security guard, who has been infectious while in the West Australian community, NSW Health is taking the following action.
To help control the spread of the infection, a new Public Health Order places travellers from Western Australia coming to NSW since 25 January under the same ‘stay-at-home’ restrictions as they would have faced had they stayed in Western Australia.
Passengers who arrived in Sydney on a flight from Perth this evening have been screened for symptoms of COVID-19, and asked if they attended any of the venues of concern identified by WA Health. None of the passengers have reported being at any of those venues.
