Two sentenced for roles in 2019 Auburn Correctional Facility riot

Two men have been sentenced to additional prison time for their roles in a 2019 riot at Auburn Correctional Facility.
Phillip Bradley, 29, and Russell Williams, 35, who were convicted by a jury in May, were sentenced by Judge Mark Fandrich in Cayuga County Court Tuesday. The two were indicted in January 2020 along with three other inmates, and were both convicted of first-degree riot, a class E felony. Williams was also convicted of second-degree assault, a class D felony.
Cayuga County Chief Assistant District Attorney Christopher Valdina said Tuesday that Bradley instigated the riot when he hit a correctional officer. He also noted that Bradley has a "lengthy" criminal history. Valdina recommended the maximum sentence for the riot charge, which is two to four years in prison.

Auburn man accused of assaulting officer pleads guilty to disorderly conduct

A 2019 confrontation between an Auburn man and an Auburn Police Department officer in a downtown parking lot was resolved in Cayuga County Court Tuesday.
Jason J. Murphy, 38, was in front of Judge Mark Fandrich Tuesday in a virtual appearance from the office of his attorney, Annaleigh Porter. Murphy pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, a violation, in satisfaction of original criminal charges that included the felony of second-degree assault.
On July 16, 2019, Murphy was arrested in the Mavis Discount Tire parking lot by Auburn Police Officer Nicholas Atkins, who saw Murphy outside a vehicle with a car door open and what he thought was a purse in his hand around 1 a.m. APD Deputy Chief Roger Anthony said at the time that Murphy reached for his pocket when Atkins approached him, and Atkins ordered Murphy to remove his hands from his pockets. Atkins later recovered a knife from Murphy. While Atkins was arresting Murphy on a city weapons ordinance violation, Murphy pulled away from Atkins, which knocked them both to the ground. Murphy was charged with second-degree assault with intent to physically injure, a class D felony, and resisting arrest and second-degree obstructing governmental administration, both misdemeanors.

Judge denies bail for man who fled Auburn police

An Auburn man who fled city police trying to take him into custody on a bench warrant will remain in jail.
Jason McPhearson, 28, was in Cayuga County Court Thursday virtually in front of Judge Thomas Leone for a return on warrant proceeding.
McPhearson is facing multiple charges, including second-degree strangulation, a class D felony; aggravated family offense, a class E felony; second-degree unlawful imprisonment, a misdemeanor; and second-degree harassment, a violation.
McPhearson was previously in front of Leone upon being indicted, and Leone had told McPhearson to report to the Cayuga County Jail by a certain time. Cayuga County Senior Assistant District Attorney Heather DeStefano said in court Thursday that McPhearson previously said he "had a bed waiting for him" at a rehabilitation center but that was later determined to be false.
