SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — The Shawnee Township trustees held an emergency meeting Monday afternoon to ensure that the township’s proposed police levy makes it onto the May 4 ballot.
Shawnee Police Chief Mike Keith said after filing the planned levy, the Ohio Board of Elections communicated that the township would have to substitute its planned 10-year police levy with a five-year one to legally make it on the ballot. Trustees met Monday to make the change in order to submit the levy before this week’s filing deadline.

LIMA — To jump-start economic development efforts in 2021, the Allen Economic Development Group is concentrating on constructing spec buildings and expanding the Gateway 5 industrial park.
Currently, AEDG’s 2021 agenda includes the construction of two spec buildings at two locations. The first build project — known as “Project Gunsmoke” — would construct a 100,000-square-foot facility on Commerce Parkway near Interstate 75.
“The challenge has been we don’t have the building structures to meet the needs, and that’s why we’re in pursuit of the spec buildings. Some businesses don’t need the building up, but most that are interested in Allen County, they want a building structure, even if it’s not ideal,” AEDG President/CEO Dave Stratton said.

Berger delivers final "State of the City"

Berger delivers final “State of the City”

LIMA — Will 2021 be the year for a downtown renaissance, the formation of a rapid response network of mental health professionals and less stopped traffic at train crossings?
Mayor David Berger hinted that it could be. In his final “State of the City” address delivered Monday to the Rotary Club of Lima, Berger announced a few upcoming initiatives for 2021 and celebrated last year’s achievements.
Out of the many subjects discussed Monday, one of more newsworthy regarded an older initiative announced roughly 18 months ago. Back in 2018, Berger’s administration partnered with Spectrum and the Ohio Department of Transportation to explore how to use technology to help solve traffic backups caused by stopped trains, and he hinted that the results of that partnership could be announced as soon as today.

LIMA — Lima City Council passed two initiatives Monday that will lead to additional development throughout Lima and its downtown core..
The more controversial of the two passed bills involved a $500,000 payment that will fund the creation of family-friendly supportive housing units meant to help homeless families in need. Local mental health agencies, including the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board and West Ohio Community Action Partnership, have publicly advocated for the creation of such a facility, but councilors were divided if they wanted the city’s funds involved.

LIMA — When Donna Tremmel was a child back in the late ’80s, she would spend her days at Sherwood Park’s community pool.
“The neighborhood kids would get up first in the morning and ride bikes down to the pool. We would be there everyday,” Tremmel said. “Growing up, that’s where everybody was at.”

Lima police, fire departments to add new positions

Lima police, fire departments to add new positions
By Josh Ellerbrock - jellerbrock@limanews.com
LIMA — After a year of cuts and attrition, the City of Lima is looking to increase its staff of police officers and firefighters to pull down overtime spending and improve public services.
During Lima City Council’s finance committee budget hearing held Wednesday night, safety service chiefs discussed the need for the positions after a hiring freeze initiated in wake of the coronavirus pandemic has kept each department from having full staffs.
As Police Chief Kevin Martin explained, prior to March the Lima Police Department had requested a budget for 86 police officers, but attrition throughout last year has depleted the number on staff down to 73 officers in total by September.
