When
was the first time you knew you wanted to become a footballer?
I have always had passion for football. As a kid, while playing on the street and in school with my friends, I started nursing the desire of playing football professionally. After I was privileged to watch the Nigeria national team playing, I started having the ambition of playing for Nigeria. How Bonfrere Jo motivated us to beat Brazil in Atlanta ‘96 – Garba Lawal, ex-Super Eagles player
Published 19 December 2020
In July, 1996, Nigeria participated in the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, United States, and won gold in the football tournament. This was considered by many Nigerians as the greatest achievement of the senior national team at the world stage. The football squad, known as the Dream Team, paraded the likes of Kanu Nwankwo, Jay-Jay Okocha, Emmanuel Amuneke, Sunday Oliseh, Daniel Amokachi and Victor Ikpeba. Nigeria shook the world when it came from three goals down to defeat Brazil in the semi-final and won against Argentina in the final game of the tournament. Garba Lawal, a coach and administrator who was part of that victorious team, takes ALEXANDER OKERE down memory lane and narrates how a team that no one gave a chance at the tournament came, saw and conquered the world
