Tokyo, Aug 4 : Star Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra raised India's hopes of a track and field medal when he qualified for the final at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday, sealing a top place from his group, and finishing ahead of Germany's Johannes Vetter, who is tipped as the favourite for gold at the quadrennial showpiece.
At the Olympic Stadium, the 23-year-old Chopra, the junior world champion, cleared the automatic qualifying mark of 83.50 metres with his first attempt of 86.65 metres in Group A to emerge a strong contender for a medal in the final to be held on Saturday.

Karachi: It was a morning Pakistan Athletics will remember for long as Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem created history on Wednesday when he qualified for the final of Javelin Throw competition in Tokyo Olympics.
Arahad is first ever Pakistani athlete to qualify for the final of any track and field event in Olympics.
Arahad was placed in group B for the contest in which athlete had to throw a minimum of 83.5m to directly qualify for the final. Only six athletes could do so, and Arshad was one of them. Rest 6 athletes advanced to the finals on basis of their respective farthest throw.

Just 24 hours after Karsten Warholm and Rai Benjamin ran a race for the ages in the men’s 400m hurdles, US rivals Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad
McLaughlin overtook Muhammad in the final straight to win the gold medal in 51.46, smashing the world record of 51.90 she set a few weeks earlier. Muhammad, the defending Olympic champion, also ran under the world record, clocking 51.48 to take silver.

With less than eight months to the start of postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Kenyan athletes are now shaking off holiday rust occasioned by Covid-19 disruptions.
National Olympic Committee-Kenya (NOC) and Athletics Kenya have decided to check on training, level of preparedness and even motivate athletes in the run-up to the competition.
On Monday, they visited Global Sports Communications camp in Kaptagat –where Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge and three-time world half marathon winner Geoffrey Kamworor –train.

A delegation from the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) and Athletics Kenya (A.K) have today visited Global Sports Communication camp in Kaptagat, Uasin Gishu County where some of the Olympic athletes are training, to check on their preparedness, motivate them as well as listen to their concerns.
Ag. Secretary-General Francis Mutuku accompanied by Athletes Representative Humphrey Kayange and Tokyo Olympics General Team Manager and Athletics Kenya Executive Member Barnabas Korir met athletes at the camp including the reigning Olympic marathon champion & the world record holder Eliud Kipchoge and world cross country and half marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor who train at the camp. They were joined by two-time Chicago and London Marathon champion, Brigid Kosgei who trains at Kapsait Nike camp.
