Lionel Richie was moved to tears by a 19-year-old singer Ronda Melton who persevered despite a hardscrabble past on Sunday's episode of American Idol.

It wasn't just Ronda's emotional vocals that turned Lionel into a wreck and caused him to lend her his handkerchief as he saw her starting to cry, too.

'American Idol': Milwaukee native Ronda Felton moves Lionel Richie to tears with her audition

Ronda Felton, a 19-year-old Milwaukee native who lives in Phoenix, was the final contestant on Sunday's episode of the ABC singing competition.
How good was her performance of "One Night Only" from the musical "Dreamgirls"? It brought "Idol" judge and music legend Lionel Richie to tears.
"I was doing really well until you came in and did something that no one has done tonight, which is touch me to the point to make me cry," Richie told Felton after her audition. "My dear … that was the moment that will change your life."
Felton was also crying as Perry and Bryan offered praise, and gave her a ticket to Hollywood.
