Joseph Majimbo Kalasinga has been sworn in as the new Member of Parliament for Kabuchai.
Kalasinga took the oath of office in the National Assembly during this afternoon’s session, in an exercise administered by Speaker Justin Muturi.
MP-elect for Matungu Peter Oscar Nabulindo is yet to be sworn in.
Kalasinga, who won on a Ford-Kenya ticket trounced seven other candidates in a hotly-contested mini-poll held last week on Thursday.
He garnered 19,274 votes representing 65 per cent of the total votes cast.

By-elections will be held today in various parts of the country. There have been intense campaigns, most notably for Matungu and Kabuchai parliamentary seats in Kakamega and Bungoma counties respectively and in London Ward, Nakuru County.
Tensions and isolated cases of violence have also been reported during the campaigns. As they head to the polls today, voters and politicians must remember that this is not a matter of life and death.
Violence has no place in democratic elections. Police should be on alert and arrest any troublemakers.
Particularly, allegations by Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika that there are plans to cause chaos ahead of the London Ward by-election should be investigated and action taken, if necessary.

Residents pick new MPs amid rigging allegations

Residents of Matungu and Kabuchai constituencies go to the polls to elect new MPs this morning amid claims of a plot to rig the election.
Yesterday, ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi claimed some Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials met ODM leaders to strategise on how to influence the outcome of the by-election in Matungu.
On Tuesday, Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala made similar claims.

All set for Matungu, Kabuchai by-elections on Thursday

Currently, the constituency has at least 62,386 registered voters who are expected to cast their ballots on March 4.
The constituency has five wards namely Namamali, Koyonzo, Mayoni, Kholera and Khalaba with a total of 116 polling stations will be used in all five wards.
Dr Joseph Amukoya became the first MP for Matungu after he won the 1997 parliamentary elections on a Kanu ticket.
But in 2002, Dr Amukoya lost to David Were who rode in National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) wave.
Were successfully defended the seat in 2007 and 2013 on two different party tickets.
He vied on the ODM ticket in 2007 and managed to secure the seat in 2013 as a Ford Kenya candidate.

Why Kabuchai and Matungu mini polls crucial for top rivals

The candidates in the by-elections have been thrown to the periphery, with focus shifting to political party leaders.

Aspirants criticise Jubilee decision to withdraw from races

Jubilee candidates for Matungu and Kabuchai parliamentary by-elections are crying foul over the party's last-minute decision not to field candidates.
Last week, Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju announced that the party would let Amani National Congress (ANC) and Ford Kenya field candidates in Matungu, Kabuchai and Machakos senatorial seat in the spirit of the handshake.
Tuju said the vacant parliamentary seats were previously held by Ford Kenya and ANC, parties that are friendly to the ruling party.

Candidates get IEBC clearance to vie in by-elections

Amani National Congress (ANC) candidate Peter Nabulindo also got the IEBC nod to vie in the by-election.
Nabulindo was accompanied by ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang’ula and a host of MPs. United Democratic Party candidate Charles Kasamani was also cleared.
However, the late Matungu MP Justus Murunga’s widow Christabel Amunga was not cleared as she lacked requisite documents.

“Mrs Murunga didn’t have all the required papers including her supporters list, which she was to present in a Microsoft Excel form. We have agreed she will come later with all the papers,” said Kirui.

Kabuchai mini poll is battle of wits between Wetang'ula, Ruto

THE STANDARD
The forthcoming Kabuchai by-election is likely to be a battle of wits between Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula (
pictured) and Deputy President William Ruto.
While Mr Wetang’ula would be pulling all stops to ensure his Ford Kenya party retains the seat, Dr Ruto would be seeking a win for his Tangatanga team to boost his 2022 presidential bid.
The seat fell vacant following the death of James Mukwe Lusweti in December last year.
Lusweti and Bungoma Woman Rep Catherine Wambilianga were the only elected leaders from the county who stood with Wetang’ula during recent attempted coup to remove him from the helm of Ford Kenya party leadership.
