MANILA, Philippines — Filipino basketball wunderkind Kai Sotto reaffirmed his commitment to the Philippine national men’s basketball team program despite his contract to play with the Adelaide 36ers of Australia’s National Basketball League.
Sotto made the reassurance to answer the “call for flag and country” from his training camp at the Kaiju Academy in Hamilton, Ohio, stressing his desire to join Gilas Pilipinas in the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers in Clark, Pampanga, from June 16 to 20.
The 7-foot-3 center, Smart Communications Inc.’s (Smart), newest ambassador, also committed to the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade, Serbia, in July.

TIMELINE: Kai Sotto's path from Ignite to implode
GOING, going, gone.
In an instant, Kai Sotto, the Philippines' best chance to have a homegrown talent to be drafted in the NBA, has seemingly squandered his golden ticket after his G League team Ignite dropped him late Tuesday night.
It was stunning news, a dagger to the heart of the basketball-loving country whose hopes were suddenly vanished, the same way the 7-foot-3 wunderkind has curiously disappeared from the map as his usually active social media accounts went dark for more than a week now.
But before Sotto's journey went from Ignite to implode, let's take a closer look at how it all came to this for the 18-year-old sensation.

Kai Sotto has been making rounds all over the internet and social media following his recent showing in the NBA G League scrimmages.
Training under coach Brian Shaw in Team Ignite, a squad full of elite NBA prospects, Sotto showed his evolved game with flashy passes and dribbling skills, and defensive prowess.
But the NBA G League is not yet done hyping its young talents.
“My goal is to be the best player that I can be. I’m trying my best to get drafted next year,” said Sotto. “When I make it to the NBA, hopefully, I’ll make everybody proud.”
