If I Fall in the Struggle, Take My Place

Ugliness defines the mood of state violence from Cali (Colombia) to Durban (South Africa), each context different and the depth of the violence particular to the location. Images of security forces cracking down on people trying to express their political rights have become commonplace. It is impossible to keep track of the events, which move swiftly from public manifestations to courtroom scenes, from the dissipation of tear gas to the invisible frustration of the prison cell. Yet, underlying these events and amidst the range of feelings that shape them lies a sense of refusal, the Great Refusal, the refusal to accept the terms dictated from those in power and the refusal to express this dissent in polite terms.

MHA seeks report on post-poll West Bengal violence

Violence unleashed allegedly by Trinamool Congress supporters against their political opponents in West Bengal has led to the loss of eight lives since last evening.
Alarmed by the incidents, the Ministry of Home Affairs has sought a report from the state government.
“The MHA has asked the West Bengal Government for a report on the post-election violence targeting opposition political workers in the state,” an MHA spokesperson tweeted. Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar had a lengthy discussion on the subject with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee when she called on him in connection with her oath ceremony at Raj Bhavan on May 5. “It is unfortunate that many lives have been lost, several injured, houses torched in the violence,” Dhankhar tweeted.

BJP MP from Darjeeling, Raju Bista, writes that political violence in Bengal will not end until those who indulge in such acts are dealt with in the same way as terrorists.
When my name was announced as the candidate from the Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal, I still remember the first few calls I received from my family and close friends.
I found it peculiar that most who called first congratulated me and cautioned me immediately after. ‘We are so happy, you will be contesting from the Darjeeling, but please be careful, it is Bengal after all’ said my childhood friend.
