Exit the dragon: Can renaming the dragon fruit as kamalam help popularise the pretty but bland fruit?
The dragon fruit has a bland and watery-tasting flesh. It comes from a cactus that grows in arid areas, like Kutch, where few other fruits do well.
Synopsis
An ingenious attempt has been made by some to brand passion fruit as Krishnaphal in India. Another ongoing attempt that might be more successful is to sell persimmons as amarphal.
When Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced his plan to rename the dragon fruit, it was widely wondered if this was politically linked. Rupani said the dragon name was not suitable because “one thinks of China”, which did not seem acceptable at a time when India’s relations with that nation are tense.

Gujarat to patent dragon fruit as 'kamalam' | India News

GANDHINAGAR: The BJP government in Gujarat has initiated the process of patenting the name of the variety of dragon fruit grown in Gujarat as “kamalam”, which is also the name of the state party headquarters. It means lotus — the symbol of Bharatiya Janata Party.
Addressing a press conference to announce the horticulture development mission, Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani said, “We have named the dragon fruit grown in Gujarat as kamalam.”
When asked about the rationale behind rechristening the fruit, the CM said there was no political angle to the move. “Farmers call it kamalam (lotus) fruit in Gujarat, hence the government has named it so,” he said.

Vadodara (Gujarat) [India], January 21 (ANI): The decision of the Gujarat Government to rename dragon fruit as 'Kamalam' is getting mixed reactions from fruit traders and consumers in the state.
Some traders celebrated the decision saying that the earlier name had a 'Chinese sense' to it while others said that name-changing will adversely impact their earnings.
"Kamalam is a good name, dragon name seems to be close to China. We are Indians and we support the new name," said Kanu, a fruit vendor in Vadodara, while speaking to ANI.
