No takers despite price crashing to year’s lowest
There were no takers for about 26 per cent of the offer worth ₹ 5.60 crore at Sale No: 15 of the auction of Coonoor Tea Trade Association despite the average price crashing to year’s lowest level of ₹ 114.80 a kg.
On the one hand, the volume offered – 18.65 lakh kg – was the year’s second highest quantity.
On the other, demand was not matching this supply as some upcountry buyers said that before investing on high priced teas, they would wait to see if there would be any trade restrictions in the wake of second wave of Covid-19.

Overall earnings up by ₹3.68 crore in just one week to reach ₹16.06 crore
With the average price crashing to ₹ 117.64 a kg — the lowest so far this calendar — as much as 83.09 per cent of the offer at sale 14 of the auction of Coonoor Tea Trade Association was sold.
This resulted in the overall earnings to rise by ₹ 3.68 crore or 29.73 per cent in just one week to reach ₹ 16.06 crore.
Homedale Estate’s Pekoe Dust grade, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, topped the entire auction when Dhruv Enterprises bought it at ₹ 317 a kg. Homedale Estate’s Red Dust grade, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, followed at ₹ 303. These were the only teas which crossed ₹ 300/kg mark.

After a fortnight of price fall, the average price at Sale 10 of the auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association rose to ₹122.67 a kg from ₹121.86 in the previous auction.
Despite this price rise, 85.48 per cent of the offer was sold against 83.30 per cent in the previous week because of better demand and rise in the quality of the teas on offer.
Crosshill Estate Special Pekoe Dust grade, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, topped the entire auctions when Vora Sons bought it for ₹ 277 a kg.
Crosshill Estate Special’s Red Dust and Pinewood Estate got ₹ 271 each, Riverside Estate ₹ 234, Shanthi Supreme ₹ 222, Hittakkal Estate and Kannavarai Estate ₹ 215 each, Waver Tree ₹ 213, Vigneshwar Estate and Hiribel Excel ₹ 211 each and Bellatti Estate ₹ 203.

Following inadequate demand, the average price at sale 8 of the auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association nosedived to ₹ 125.62 a kg – the lowest so far in calendar 2021.
This was nearly ₹ 6 less per kg over the previous week.
Despite this, there were no takers for as much 41 per cent of the offer resulting in teas worth ₹8.53 crore remaining unsold.
The Broken Orange Pekoe CTC grade of Crosshill Estate Special, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, topped the auctions when Tea Services India Pvt Ltd bought it for ₹ 301 a kg. This was the only tea which crossed ₹ 300/kg level this week.

Three CTC leaf grades – Crosshill Estate Special, Pinewood Estate and Pinewood Premium – topped the entire auctions of sale 7 of Coonoor Tea Trade Association fetching ₹300 a kg each.
Among other CTC teas, Riverside Estate got ₹ 225, Homedale Premium ₹ 217, Vigneshwar Estate ₹ 216, Kannavarai Estate₹ 213, Waver Tree and Palmera Estate ₹ 211 each, Shanthi Supreme and Bellatti Estate ₹ 209 each, Hittakkal Estate ₹ 208 and Professor Superfine ₹ 200.
Among orthodox teas, Kodanad got ₹ 275, Havukal ₹ 253, Kairbetta ₹ 242, Kil Kotagiri ₹ 221, Devashola ₹ 211 and Narikkal Estate ₹ 201.
Overall, teas worth ₹ 7.77 crore remained unsold as there were no takers for as much as 40 per cent of the offer.
This was despite the average price dropping to ₹ 131.51 a kg – the lowest so far in calendar 2021.

Two grades of green tea topped the auctions of Sale No 6 of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association.
“The ‘super fine’ Green Tea grade of Pascoes Woodlands topped the entire auctions when BR Tea Co bought it for ₹321 a kg”, Ravichandran Broos, General Manager, Paramount Tea Marketing P Ltd told

“The ‘MONGRA’ Grade Green tea of Pascoes Woodlands came next when Jai Tulsi Enterprises bought it for ₹296 a kg”, he said.
Among orthodox teas, Kodanad got ₹263, Havukal ₹261, Kairbetta ₹250, Glendale ₹232, Nonsuch Orthodox ₹226, Kil Kotagiri ₹223, Narikkal Estate ₹215, Devashola ₹205 and Mailoor ₹200.
Among other CTC teas, Pinewood Estate got ₹265, Crosshill Estate Special ₹256, Riverside Estate ₹221, Hittakkal Estate ₹219, Bellatti Estate ₹216, Shanthi Supreme ₹215, Homedale Premium ₹206, Kannavarai Estate ₹202, Selva Ganapathy Premium and Navilkal Estate ₹200 each.

Teas worth ₹ 4.13 crore remained unsold at Sale No: 4 of the auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) as there were no takers for about 23 per cent of the offer despite the average price dropping to ₹ 132.25 a kg – the lowest so far in calendar 2021.
The demand was generally less compared to the previous weeks as upcountry buyers and exporters turned selective for some grades.
For the second consecutive week in 2021, no tea could cross ₹ 300/kg mark.
The Pekoe Dust grade of the bought leaf tea factory, Crosshill Tea Factory, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, topped the entire auctions when Shreeji Traders bought it for ₹ 263 a kg.

A new price record was set up by the bought leaf Factory, Homedale Tea Factory, at Sale No: 2 of the auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association.
“Our Red Dust grade, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers (GTB), topped the entire auctions when Badhusha Tea Co., bought it for ₹ 383 a kg”, Raman A Menon, Homedale’s Managing Partner told
BusinessLine.
“Consequently, we have broken our last week’s price record of ₹ 381. This is a new record as it is the highest price fetched by any of our teas since manufacturing started in our factory 72 years ago”, he said.
