Child Migration and Stolen Generations in Popular Historical Consciousness
In the mid-1990s, harrowing stories emerged of child migrants and Stolen Generations who had been taken from their families. Side-by-side, these narratives produced unprecedented responses in public discourse, yet scholars have struggled to make sense of the cacophony of debate, the millions of marching feet and the mountain of writing inspired by these histories. Tim Calabria’s project will assess the extensive papers left by Sir Ronald Wilson, president of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission during this period, and seek to contribute to the understanding of this profound moment of social change in Australia, as people concurrently engaged in the Reconciliation movement and grappled with the bleak outcomes of child migration for many institutionalised children.

Write back writing workshops: Port Adelaide Enfield

There are two sessions left in Write Back! Writing sessions for aspiring writers.
Kylie Maslen Writing Memoir
Tuesday 15 June, 6-8pm Semaphore Library, 14 Semaphore Rd, Semaphore
We all have a story to tell, but how do we make sure readers will connect with our own? While some people will have remarkable life experiences to detail, others will need to be more creative to make their story stand out – and cut through the slushpile to get your manuscript into the hands of publishers. In this workshop Kylie Maslen draws on her own experiences as a memoirist and author of Show Me Where It Hurts, to teach you to find the best angles within your story and marry those themes with broader context and experience. You will learn to structure and fashion your story into an engaging, empathetic narrative that readers can relate to, and in doing so begin to craft a memorable memoir they can’t put down.

The conversation about endometriosis and invisible illness has finally reached the arts | Kylie Maslen

In 2015 a revolt sprung seemingly from nowhere as women began talking openly about chronic, invisible illnesses.
The Guardian Australia journalist Gabrielle Jackson shared her personal experience of endometriosis – the pain, the dismissal by doctors, the impacts on daily life – in a powerful opinion piece. That piece expanded into an international investigation by the Guardian on a condition that had previously received little attention either in the media or among the medical establishment.
