It’s a very different landscape this week than it was a year ago, just before the pandemic forced cinemas to close around the country. Still, with New York cinemas cautiously reopening this week and many other markets determined to bring moviegoing back, the studios and indie distributors alike are bringing many of their long-delayed releases onto screens, albeit in an entirely new way.
For contrasting examples, look at how two of the majors are handling what were intended to be family film tentpoles: Paramount decided to bypass theaters entirely with “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run,” using the title to launch its new subscription service, Paramount Plus (audiences can also rent it, at a price of $19.99, for a limited time via PVOD platforms). Disney tested a similar approach with “Mulan” late last summer, and now unveils its latest animated princess movie, “Raya and the Last Dragon” — though that label disguises the many ways in which this one advances the formula — both in theaters and via Disney Plus (where it can be rented for a premium surcharge).

This particular example suffers a bit from visual monotony, as most of it takes place in a French police office that’s notable mostly for its blinding array of overhead fluorescent lights. There, Chief Inspector Buron (Benoît Poelvoorde, a Belgian actor still best known in the States for starring in and co-directing 1993’s
Man Bites Dog) interrogates a murder suspect, Louis Fugain, who insists that he simply found a dead body outside his apartment building and phoned the authorities. In theory, the film’s narrative consists of a painstaking reconstruction of his actions on the night in question, which raised suspicion because A) a nosy woman in his building saw him leave it and return no fewer than seven times between midnight and dawn, and B) Fugain’s iron, of all things, was found beside the corpse, which had had its skull split open. Fugain has perfectly rational explanations for everything, though he decides not to take any chances with the

investigation like this, at this point, how important is something like motive? or does that matter at this stage of the manhunt? >> it matters a lot. basically, for someone to have such a an attitude to do such a brazen wickedly evil act like this, it really shows that maybe he's predetermined the outcome. whether he's going to commit suicide, have a shoot-out with the police, it makes him extremely dangerous and you know, hopefully if he's watching this, the best thing would be turn yourself in. nobody else has to get hurt. we don't officers to get hurt. we don't want accessorieses to get hurt and don't want him to get hurt. so we want a safe conclusion to this. if you're working at a bus station, train station, motels, hotels it, campsites, keep an eye out. if you see someone that looks
