Jazzology: Masters & Baron update Ellingtonia, Bill Evans comes back to life, Alan Braufman revives the NYC Loft Scene and "Mike Drop" makes Jazz from Beatles!
Jazzology's August column digs deep as the genius of Bill Evans was never more evident, the '70s NYC Loft Scene is revived, Ellington gets updated, and "Mike Drop" proves Lennon/McCartney are Jazz composers!

Mark Masters and trombonist
Art Baron completely transcending, revitalizing and reimagining the music of bassist Jimmie Blanton and saxophonist Ben Webster who toiled in the Duke Ellington Orchestra, changing the face of jazz itself in the process. That particular era of Ellingtonia—1940-1942—was one of the most fertile periods for Duke, who wrote and arranged specifically for his musicians, giving them ample room to shine. Baron played in that orchestra 30 years later, both for Duke and then his son Mercer who took over the band upon the 1974 death of his dad.

Hafez Modirzadeh's Chromodality System Bridges Jazz with Iranian Traditional Music

Photos by Jill Steinberg
Iranian-American saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh has spent decades straddling two traditions, finding the commonalities, and using them to create something entirely new. Born in Durham, North Carolina to an Iranian father and an Irish/Russian mother, he came to jazz as a teenager, enraptured by Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, and Lester Young. “It wasn’t until I had to consciously consider who I was in this society and as a musician,” he says, that he was drawn to Persian music, despite having heard his father sing and play the
tombak (a type of drum) at home. Living in the Bay Area, he began studying with a traditional Persian musician, Mahmoud Zoufonoun, and soon perceived similarities between the two approaches to making music.

15 Great Jazz Albums of 2020

15 Great Jazz Albums of 2020
Jazz may not have the mainstream cultural dominance that it once did, but it remains a thriving, multi-faceted form of music that continues to have so much more to say. Jazz informs so much of the rap and electronic music that
does have mainstream cultural dominance today, and it's long popped up in indie rock, metal, punk, and other styles of popular music too. Though jazz never went away, the past few years have seen a serious jazz renaissance that continues to grow, branch out into new innovative territory, and attract new listeners. The world of jazz is so vast and we don't claim to be experts of all of it, but if you're looking to catch up on some of the great jazz albums released in 2020, we put together a list of 15 that we strongly recommend. It's not a definitive best-of, and we probably haven't even heard all of the great jazz albums released this year, but we'd like to think it's a pretty good place to start.
