The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lost its sole seat in the Assembly when Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI(M) candidate V. Sivankutty defeated Kummanam Rajasekharan of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by 3,949 votes.
Congress leader and K. Muraleedharan, MP, who had a much-hyped campaign launch, turned up a distant third. In the constituency, which the BJP had dubbed as the “Gujarat of Kerala”, Mr. Sivankutty polled 55,837 votes, Mr. Rajasekharan 51,888 votes, and Mr. Muraleedharan 36,524 votes.

Most of the recent post-poll surveys had suggested that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by reigning chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan will win the elections. However, opposition minister Ramesh Chennithala had claimed that post-poll surveys cannot be trusted and assured that the United Democratic Front (UDF) will win the elections easily. In the meantime, the Bharatiya Janata Party also believes that they will win at least three or four seats in this legislative assembly elections.

The exit poll results for Kerala that went to the polls on April 6 will be out Thursday, April 29. Around 73.58% of the total 2.74 crore voters exercising their franchise on the day of polling. The exit polls will begin shortly after voting for the eighth phase in West Bengal will conclude.
Kerala is among the five states that went to the polls in March and April. The other four are Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and the Union territory of Puducherry. While Kerala and Tamil Nadu went to polls in a single phase, Assam and West Bengal had multiple phases. Assam had three phases while West Bengal had eight – the final phase will take place tomorrow.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A day after the Lok Ayukta found Higher Education Minister KT Jaleel guilty of nepotism and abuse of power, the CPM has come out in support of the minister, who is all set to move the High Court against the verdict.
Confirming his decision to approach the higher court, Jaleel pointed out to TNIE that the matter was earlier brought before the governor as well as the High Court and both had ruled in his favour.

KOCHI: After the month-long intense campaigning by various political parties in Ernakulam, it is now up to the electorate to decide on their choice of candidates. On Monday, most of the candidates were on a silent campaign, concentrating more on squad work and door-to-door campaign as a last-minute effort to ensure maximum support. In the district, a total of 26,49,340 voters in 14 assembly constituencies will march to the booths on Tuesday. The district has 93,359 new voters this year. As per the Election Commission’s order, the voters should carry a valid ID proof with them.
