Whatever Happened To . . .

I was thinking back on some of the targets we were really high on and some who even committed, only to later decommit. Wondering if the board had heard anything of past targets/decommits and their whereabouts. A few come to mind: Aubrey Solomon, Raylen Wilson, Andrew Rappleyea, Kevonte Henry, Mario Eugenio, Otis Reese, Are there any you can think of that it worked out for or didn't? What if they had stayed?

PORTAL PORTAL PORTAL: PORTAL

Portal! NEEDS The portal is a different game than recruiting high schoolers and for a team like Michigan they're generally looking for a few key plug and play pieces, especially since they've historically struggled to get undergrad transfers in. There does seem to be some movement on that front given a number of confirmed undergrad transfer offers, but we'll see how that actually plays out. Michigan does not seem to need anyone at QB, WR, DT, LB, or S at the moment. With the addition of OL LaDarius Henderson I would imagine that Michigan is pretty set there as well if they are able to keep the guards out of the NFL draft with NIL money. That leaves the following spots as ones of interest, ranked in approximate order of need: Cornerback. If DJ Turner and Gemon Green both go to the draft Michigan will be looking for a CB very hard. They will return Will Johnson and Mike Sainristil but they have nobody else who's seen a snap and no seemingly sure thing amongst the other freshmen or this recruiting class. Tight end. Michigan will have Colston Loveland and Max Bredeson back next year; because they are Michigan that means they are two short of a full crew. Matt Hibner got some time last year and may step up but there's no clear option at #4. Edge. Michigan will presumably lose Mike Morris. They bring back Eyabi Okie, Braiden McGregor, Derrick Moore, Taylor Upshaw (probably), and Jaylen Harrell. None of those guys is a burly anchor type and none of those guys is a sure thing to be a rush end. More lottery tickets here may be advisable. Running back. If Blake Corum heads to the draft Michigan has CJ Stokes and (probably) Kalel Mullings to take some of the load off of Donovan Edwards, but if a Braelon Allen-level mooseback is available to be 1B to Edwards's 1A there is clearly an interest from Michigan. Anyone short of that and Michigan might as well roll with what they've got. BPA. I mean if there's a dude, you know? One note: scholarship limits no longer exist at a school like Michigan. Do you know how many "scholarship" players Michigan carried last year? 88. The ones that didn't fit in the 85 just got NIL. We are no longer bothering to bother with the "how many" question. 2022 Recruiting: Derrick Moore

Notes Consensus AA, UA Game MVP, MD PoY. Twitter. Film: Senior Highlights: Hudl. Soph highlights. UA practice reps. Winning solves a lot of problems. Despite running through the 2021 season with, respectively, the best and fastest-rising defensive ends in the country, and lots of playing time to offer once they both left for the 1st round, Michigan's edge recruiting was flagging. The productive Mario Eugenio was in the class, then out when they kept recruiting his position. Kevonte Henry was in the class, then out when Courtney Morgan left. The staff was in early on Joshua Josephs but lost him to Tennessee, and lost Beau Atkinson to North Carolina, and let Joseph Adedire drift off to Texas Tech in the process. Late in the cycle the Aidan Hutchinson-esque Ethan Burke was in, then Texas yanked him out. But when you crush Ohio State 42-27, win the Big Ten, and go to the playoffs, suddenly you're in line for some opportunities that others don't get. For example, when Lincoln Riley left Oklahoma for USC, and the Sooners' class started coming apart, Michigan was able to swiftly move in and extract one of its best defensive pieces. It didn't hurt that this pièce de résistance played for Known Friend and Trusted Agent Biff Poggi, along with Blake Corum, Nikhai Hill-Green, and various other semi-pros to come through Poggi's national heavyweight St. Frances. He also turned out to be a greater coup than we all made of it; Moore obliterated the competition at the UA All-American game, was named MVP, and shot up to just outside the edge of 5-star territory. Hello: Deuce Spurlock

We are still playing catch-up, and hopefully I’ll have time to get through them all this week and put out a general recruiting update. Next up in the order they committed, 3* AL linebacker Tim “Deuce” Spurlock Jr. A name that Courtney Morgan suggested when he came onboard, Spurlock was invited to Michigan’s camp in June, hit it off with LBs coach George Helow, earned an offer, and seemed on the verge of committing in July before Michigan apparently told him to hold off while they pursued some A-1 targets, all but one of whom have since come off the board. That plus an extraordinary start to his senior season—Spurlock had 21 tackles, 6 TFLs and 3 sacks in one game this season—seems to have been what shifted him into the take category. He came up for the Rutgers game, committed before kickoff, and announced that Sunday. GURU RATINGS I should note that 247 is in the middle of a composite update so Spurlock might be in the 1,000s by the time the time you read this. He was at 994 when I started and 999 at 4:06 PM yesterday when I put this article in the hopper. Rivals: 6’2/220 ESPN: 6’2/200 247: 6’2/200 247 Comp 3*, 5.5, NR Ovr NR OLB, NR AL 3*, 78, #308 SE #52 OLB, #29 AL 3*, 85 (NR Ovr) #94 ATH, #38 AL 3*, 0.8527, #999 Ovr, #79 ATH, #42 FL 3.40* ➡ 3.61 ⬆ 3.42* ➡ 3.53 ⬆ Bottom row is a conversion of the above to a 5-star scale. Arrows show trend of recruiting rankings. An arrow is like a third of a star. The only movement in the rankings came when ESPN added Spurlock to their database recently. They’re also the most bullish—the other two sites have him ranked down where the 2-stars used to roam before their kind were decimated by FBS over-settlement. The extra 20 pounds reported by Rivals seems significant if we consider the program pays a lot of attention to size. My program source says Spurlock was 215 when they had him up here to camp last summer, and the school roster (via MaxPreps) reads 217. If his senior season continues as it has there’s a lot of room to move up. The Michigan recruiting comp here is exacting, if ancient (sorry coach, but we are). Roy Manning was listed at 6’2”/210 out of high school, and made the bottom of some regional lists as a “futuristic” SAM linebacker who could cover in space or blitz an edge. The more recent example is Devin Gil, who was ranked around the same spot but was also smaller and not as athletic. Michael Barrett and Dhani Jones are in range as well.
