Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC on ESPN 22. I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host, relaying all of the action to you just as I see it. Tonight the UFC brings a fairly obviously filler card, but the main event is a very relevant middleweight fight. Former champion Robert Whittaker will be trying to lay claim to a rematch for the belt he used to hold if he can best Kelvin Gastelum. These two were supposed to meet for the title a few years ago but that was postponed due to a Whittaker medical emergency. Beyond that the pickings are a little slim, but not totally absent. Drakkar Klose welcomes Jeremy Stephens back to lightweight, Andrei Arlovski will step in on short notice against Chase Sherman, and on the prelims Austin Hubbard is fighting and he’s usually good for a scrap. Oh, to say nothing of heavyweight submission specialists Juan Espino and Alexandr Romanov squaring off. So let’s all hope for a good event.

UFC Vegas 24 Bonuses: Whittaker & Gastelum Bag Extra $50K
UFC Vegas 24 Bonuses: Whittaker & Gastelum Bag Extra $50K
Despite losing the co-main event just hours before, UFC Vegas 24 delivered some impressive performances from the fighters at the UFC Apex. Middleweight Gerald Meerschaert and bantamweight Tony Gravely were among those who earned an extra $50,000 for their efforts in the octagon. Robert Whittaker and Kelvin Gastelum also earned themselves an extra bag of cash.
Performance of the Night: Gerald Meerschaert
Meerschaert turned in a phenomenal submission win over Bartosz Fabinski in the first-round, in his first apperance since falling to Khamzat Chimaev last September. It was a relatively easy night of work for the Wisconsin native who became the submission wins leader in UFC middleweight history. After taking a few early shots on the feet, Meerschaert quickly took the fight to the ground against the cage, sinking in a tight guillotine choke that put Fabinski to sleep halfway through the opening round.

Morning Report: Kamaru Usman believes Nate Diaz would turn down a title shot if he beats Leon Edwards

Next weekend Kamaru Usman will defend his welterweight title in a main event rematch with Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261. Usman and Masvidal first fought last July with Usman winning a wide decision but with the absence of any other clear cut welterweight contenders the UFC chose to run it back. Fortunately, should Usman once again prove victorious next weekend, the issue of clear top contender for “The Nigerian Nightmare” may be solved.
At the end of March it was announced that third-ranked welterweight contender Leon Edwards would be taking on Nate Diazin a five-round co-main event fight at UFC 262 in May. It was an unexpected fight but one that Usman says should give Edwards the bump he needs to finally get a title shot.

The exact number of UFC fighters that have contracted COVID-19 over the past year isn’t known, and we assume there are more than a few serious cases where fighters struggled to recover from the potentially deadly illness. As it stands, the big UFC names who have been affected most by the Coronavirus are Cody Garbrandt, Khamzat Chimaev, and Alexander Volkanovski.
Garbrandt and Chimaev are what’s known as COVID long-haulers, people who have recovered from the virus but suffered through side effects for months afterwards. Cody Garbrandt told some pretty scary stories about blood clots, while Khamzat Chimaev seemed on the edge of retirement at one point as he coughed up blood every time he exerted himself.

Khamzat Chimaev targeting late summer return to the UFC, says manager
Image via @ufcrussia on Instagram (photographer not listed)
UFC welterweight contender Khamzat Chimaev is targeting a return to the Octagon in the late summer, according to his manager, Ali Abdelaziz.
Chimaev was supposed to fight Leon Edwards in March in what would have been a potential No. 1 contender fight at 170lbs. However, Chimaev was forced to withdraw from the fight due to a bad experience with COVID-19, one that left him coughing up blood and thinking he had cancer. Fortunately, it appears as though Chimaev is now finally getting healthy. While he originally said that he was going to walk away from the sport, he has said in recent weeks that he has his motivation back and he is excited to fight again soon.

UFC Fight Night: Whittaker vs. Gastelum.
Former champion Robert Whittaker bounced back after losing his title in 2019 by going 2-0 in 2020. He picked up decision victories over Darren Till and Jared Cannonier, and he will look to continue his streak into 2021 with his headlining affair against Kelvin Gastelum. Gastelum ended a three-fight skid when he defeated Ian Heinisch earlier in the year. A victory over Whittaker would go a long way toward Gastelum earning another shot against current champion Israel Adesanya after the pair battled in 2019’s “Fight of the Year.”

Khamzat Chimaev issues bold statement ahead of UFC return: "I'm the champ here"
Khamzat Chimaev vs. Kamaru Usman
Khamzat Chimaev has issued a bold statement ahead of his proposed UFC return, this while taking a shot at reigning welterweight champ Kamaru Usman.
Chimaev (9-0 MMA) has been one of the many unfortunate victims of the global pandemic and due to lingering symptoms, has been unable to compete since the fall of 2020.
Following his 17-second knockout win over Gerald Meerschaert in September, ‘Borz’ was booked to fight top welterweight contender Leon Edwards. However, after three slated bookings with ‘Rocky’ failed to come to fruition, the UFC ultimately moved on from the bout.
At one point things got so bad for Khamzat Chimaev that the undefeated prospected actually announced his retirement from fighting. However, after regaining his health, ‘Borz’ is now targeting a summer return to the cage.

The Great Subside: The UFC vs Jon Jones and The Further Descent of MMA Fighting
It's kind of unfair to pick on MMAFighting because the MMA media in general is full of boring un-energetic basic bitches. Barely any of them standout anymore and all have the same shitty takes.
It's like one of them good looking blonde chicks that show up on Fox News parroting republican talking points. There's like a million of them and none of them have anything unique to say. Same thoughts...same looking for attention.
I read very few sites these days. They're all the same articles/formats with the same biases. I can pretty much word the way an articles gonna read before even clicking it.

Khamzat Chimaev may not get his first opponent choice should he return in July as planned because Neil Magny has no intention of waiting around for him.
Neil Magny has no plans of being Leon Edwards’d in 2021: sidelined indefinitely as the UFC tries to put together a fight against Khamzat Chimaev. After “retiring” earlier this year due to COVID-19 complications, the Russian-born rising star retracted his retirement and replaced it with a Declaration of Smashing.
Chimaev made it clear that he plans on smashing everyone, and his manager claims that Borz will be training with alligators and sharks before setting out on this venture. And for his first human opponent post-recovery, Chimaev set his sights on Neil Magny.

Khamzat Chimaev reveals he thought he had cancer when he coughed up blood

UFC welterweight prospect Khamzat Chimaev revealed he thought he had cancer when he coughed up blood after a training session in Las Vegas.
Chimaev was supposed to fight Leon Edwards in March but he was forced out of the fight due to a severe battle with COVID-19, a battle that left him coughing up blood and thinking his career was over. Speaking to RT Sport in a recent interview, Chimaev revealed that his initial instinct was to think he had cancer after seeing himself cough up blood into the sink.
“Yes, (the medical care in Las Vegas) was good but they made me train. I was doing good at first, then they told me that I could start cardio training. And I felt sick again. I went to the bathroom and started coughing up blood. That just messed up my mind a bit. Honestly, it scared me… cancer? Like, ‘I have been sick so long, why doesn’t it go away?’ Different thoughts were going through my mind. Plus I was alone there in Las Vegas, struggling to overcome it all,” Chiamev said.
