Dunwoody City Council set to resume talks on development code changes


DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Dunwoody City Council was set this week to revisit an ordinance that would reduce the minimum land area required for a planned development, which includes some modifications discussed at its previous session.
The revised proposal calls for a minimum contiguous land area of 200,000 square feet (4.5 acres) if all or part of the land is “located in a suburban neighborhood character area or in the Institutional/Campus character area as established in the comprehensive plan.”
In all other areas, the planned development must have a minimum contiguous land area of 1.5 acres, according to revised ordinance.
The ordinance also reflected several conditions recommended by the Dunwoody Planning Commission, including the provision that the commission could defer the matter up to three times. On the fourth deferral, the matter would be moved forward to the council without recommendation.

Friends, family honor Dunwoody hero who died saving others


DUNWOODY, Ga. – Dunwoody resident Kim McGrady, who died April 8 while saving swimmers caught in a riptide at a Miramar, Fla. beach, was described as “an amazing son, father and husband” at a memorial service last week.
More than 300 people attended the April 14 service, held at Perimeter Church Outdoor Chapel in Johns Creek. McGrady, who was a field operations manager at Chick-fil-A, saved three people before succumbing to the riptide. Another man, Layne Gravois, of Gray, La., 21, also died in the incident.
Friends and members of McGrady’s family, including his daughter Kaleigh, son Colton, and wife Leigh Anne, spoke at the service, emphasizing McGrady’s selflessness, faith and dedication to his friends and family.

College Honor Student on Spring Break in Florida Drowns Trying to Save Little Boy in Rip Tide

Layne Gravois, of Louisiana, was part of a human chain dozens of people long that was formed to try to save a child who was caught in a dangerous riptide. The chain broke about 50 people down the line. He was rushed to a hospital, but could not be saved.
A 21-year old Louisiana college student drowned while trying to rescue a child from a dangerous rip tide while he was vacationing with friends in Florida on Spring Break.
The tragedy took place at Miramar Beach on April 8. The Walton County Sheriff’s closed waters in the county after more than a dozen people were pulled from the Gulf of Mexico that day due to extremely dangerous conditions of high surf and riptides, according to a statement from the Walton County Sheriff’s Department.

MIRAMAR BEACH - An LSU student on spring break in Florida drowned after trying to rescue two people from a rip current.
WWL-TV reports 21-year-old Layne Gravois of Gray was on a trip April 8 with two Nicholls State University students in Miramar Beach when they spotted the boy in distress and tried to help. 
Family members said Gravois was pulled from the water but later died. The other two students were also hurt in the rescue.

A Dunwoody father is being remembered as a hero after saving three people caught in a riptide in the Florida panhandle.
DUNWOODY, Ga. - Family and friends will say goodbye Wednesday to a Dunwoody father who died saving three people from a riptide in Florida on April 8.
Kim McGrady, 55, was on vacation with his family when he heard people screaming from the water at Miramar Beach.
According to deputies in Florida, dozens of people had to be rescued from rough waters. A memorial page for McGrady said he was one of the first people to jump into action. As McGrady went to save three people, he also got caught in the rip ride.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office closed waters in the county on April 8 after more than a dozen people were pulled from the Gulf of Mexico.
“During these water rescues, the flags stood at single red,” the sheriff’s office wrote on social media on Saturday. “That still indicates that the water was an incredible threat to human life with high surf and strong rip currents.”
Another man, later identified as 55-year-old Kim McGrady, also died by accidental drowning on the same day near the same beach. 11Alive.com reports that a memorial set up for McGrady said that he also died trying to save others while at the beach with his family.
